To do or not to do... E39 M5 Spotted if someone wants it

Good day folks!

Due to life giving me way too many lemons and me being unable to drink vodka and being sick and tired of lemonade, it has come to the point where I might have to get rid of my awesome F30 330d MSport and get something cheaper. Although not final yet, but I think there is hell of a lot of better things I can do with the money than spending it on a car (maybe I'm getting old :roflol: )

This is breaking my heart, but it is what it is.

Now to more interesting things... Just saw this when browsing for E90 330d and such, as is natural for someone who really likes the M's, I started looking what is available lately in terms of the older M5 (not for me to buy).

Came across this vehicle, maybe there is a fanatic that might be interested.
If the KM is real then this isn't bad I think.

Anyone know anything about this vehicle?

I am contemplating getting something like this one day as I have always dreamed of owning one and even more so when I sold me Lumina SS a few years back, but to be honest, I am quite scared of buying an M5...

Fuel consumption on these beasts are hectic yes, but I'm more concerned with the cost of owning one of these beauties...
I understand TPS, MAFs, Vanos systems and potentially clutch are some of the major concerns on these from what I read on the forums and then brakes on these monsters range from around 3k for the discs alone (unless I missed something on that post) and I think they said the discs tend to last between 20 - 30 k km. That true??? :skit:

However, no-one can tell me more than you gents and I tend to trust BMW Fanatics more than other forums where people just seem to moan a lot... :roflol:

Potentially another Lumina might be an option, never drove anything as reliable as that car was and they are very cheep to maintain if you do it yourself. Just be weary of the fuel usage though...

Wait, hold on a second;

You want to save money by going from a diesel to a M car. Not any M car, but a 15 year old model? :biglol:

Lol! Would not ever do that no, but that would have been the dream in order to own one of these legends. Sorry, my post is a little misleading I see. Will go edit it a bit.

More concerned about what the guys said about the brakes, was that a miss type?:smashScreen:
I also saw guys said they could buy the MAFs from Goldwagen at a hell of a lot less than BMW asked for them. Anyone here actually done that? I guess the housing is different, so moving the internals over would be required yes?

If I were to change, I would go to a E90 320d or 330d.
Been checking the vehicles for sale on here for something like that just incase I do make a change.

All of the above and much much more to worry about.:skit:

You can add subframes breaking, constant consumption of suspension parts, leaky diffs, fragile clutches, bearing failures, fair deal of electrical problems, exploding plastic clips everywhere.........

With the weight and speed this car is capable of, you can ruin a brand new set of brakes in one day.

But it is an awesome car when everything is working well. And a hateful thing when you have to replace something that will inevitably break.

Updated original post to be more informative of owning one of these M5's as a long term dream. Sorry about the original post being a little misleading.

Should maybe have posted it under vehicles spotted for incase a fanatic would be interested?

Prices on these M5's have become more realistic. Saw a few advertised last year for north of 240k... Bit steep.

The nature of the beast I guess, always have to pay to play.
There is just something about the E39 M5 that tugs at the heart strings... I heard a few clips of some with straight through pipes post the resonators. Sounds fine when you drive it neatly but step on that load peddle and you will give people next to you a heart attack. It is amazing!!

Saw 2007 (I think) M6 Coupe, blue with something like 67k km on the clock at Zambesi around October last year. Owner traded it in when he ordered his new M6 GrandT.
Car was beautiful and pretty much spotless.
Think they wanted 340k for it.
Forgot to add it to the vehicles spotted on here :hammerhead::hammerhead:
Did not want to make that mistake again.

Wonder if a fanatic picked it up. Was gone a few weeks after.

I do, who doesn't :tiptoe:

But not on my current budget no. Medical bills are killing me and useless but expensive medical "aids" that pay for nothing is not helping... But lets not get into that discussion...

One day I would like to own a M, more exactly, two M's.
E39 M5
2016 shape M6 (can't decide between Coupe or GrandT but luckily I don't have to decide :roflol: )

Currently love my Diesel waaaaaay too much.
Miss the sound of a V8 more though :-/
Our MD drives a Range Rover Sport with the 5l Supercharged Jag V8. I hate him every time he starts that thing up...

Get the M5 and buy a cheapie like a 320d or 530d for around R50,000 - then you have the best of both worlds - if you want to save money the best way is to learn to swing your own spanners - get yourself some decent diagnostic software as well if you have an older BMW

PS - I can't believe how bland that white M5 looks in all white with the flat silver wheels and the pre-facelift headlights. Condition and mileage are definitely plus points though.

Hehe, it does look quite bland doesn't it?
Have been swinging my own spanners for a long long time, but does not make me less scared of those M's though :tiptoe:
How expensive is it to maintain one of these beasts really?

The e46 330d I had is currently being driven by my dad for work purposes as he is clocking some serious mileage. Pretty sure it has over 300k km on the clock now and the only trouble I've ever had with that vehicle was fuel pump required replacing once (the one under the passage side door area) and I had to replace the engine mountings as one was sagging a bit. Also had to replace the boost pipe once.

Other than that, not a day's trouble. Was kinda hoping to get the same life out of my current 330d but...

Andrew... You are planting a very very bad seed here :roflol::hammerhead:

I have seen some very well looked after e46 330d or 330i vehicles for around 50 to 70k but I should probably also look at something like a Polo/Golf tdi as well. Like you said, having something really sensible for a daily that is also reliable and relatively cheap to maintain and then having the M5 toy is actually not a bad idea. If the M5 needs some TLC at some point due to Vanos or whatever, it can stand for a month or two while I source parts, whatever...

Andrew... :hammerhead: :hammerhead: :hammerhead:
I listed this for some potentially interested fanatics, now you are turning me into one of those...

+1 I thought the same thing, it doesnt have that M5 appeal as i would have expected.

I agree with the 320D cheapie and then an M5 or alternatively an SS isnt a bad option, especially because you have previous experience with them.

Yeah, the SS was an amazing vehicle, had even less issues than the 330d and I drove that to around 120k km.
Had RG Motorsport exhaust, K&N filter and a custom tune on it. Made around 212kw or 215kw on the wheels, but I can tell you this. It ain't no BMW :-/

Acceleration wise, well, my current 330d will wipe the floor with it, and that is just sad considering it had a 5.7l V8...

I placed new slotted discs on Front and Back and some proper pads yet it still stopped like a wheelbarrow on ice... Had two occasions where I had to really climb on the brakes because some idiot just drove right in front of me. In any of my BMW's I would have not had a sweat going. In the SS, well, I almost had to find a new seat :roflol:

Don't know if the 2007+ (6.0 versions with the newer body shape) is any better, but damn...
Fun cars, just not as good as you would think sadly...

Just the front fogs... No real issue with that. I drive with mine on at night and I tend to put those on along with the angel eyes... Looks nice that way.
