Timing chain - rattling noise

Hi all

So my e90 320d 2011 model started making a funky noise - kind of rattling. I took it to the BMW garage, to where the person said "It is a timing chain problem. You can still drive it but you should look at getting it fixed later this year".

I asked my father's opinion and his mates, and they all feel that you should not drive any vehicle where there is a noise on the timing chain - due to the big risk and expensive consequences.

My question to everyone here is - is it still safe to drive back home, 500km? Or rather get it fixed asap.

Is it something to worry about?

Regards
M

You're in for quite a big bill. Sorry bud. The engine has to be pulled as the timing chain sits at the back of the engine.

Is the car out of plan?

Can't give you any advice on whether it's safe to drive. But I'd err on the side of caution and just have it fixed. The problem is more documented on the European forums. Maybe look there for answers.

Indeed out of motorplan and I did investigate the European forums as well. In a sense I get mixed feedback, one person stated "I've been driving it for two years and nothing has happened so far", whereas others went on to say "do it asap".

My plan is to have it done asap as well, just wondering how much further to drive - or not :)

But thanks either way for your feedback.

Hi.
This is not a nice thing to happen.

How many KM's? Is yours auto or manual? Is it the 135/380nm model?

Thanks.
