Thrust bearing problem or not?

hey guys,

my e46 is back at the mechanic. the clutch kit was replaced as the thrust bearing was worn. Basically I was hearing a noise when de/pressing the clutch pedal.

Anyway a Sachs unit was put in a few weeks back. The car was fine until a few days later when the noise returned. Ofcourse I took it back and the unit was replaced with a new one from the supplier.

Now I have noticed the sound has returned with the second unit in but its not so loud and is intermittent. I just spoke to the mechanic again now and he cant hear the noise. I have asked that he take the car for a longer run and then let it sit for about 3-4 hours and try again. he also mentioned he will check the slave cylinder which acts on the fork.

any thoughts or similar experience with this problem?

Take the car for a 2nd oppinion somewhere else. Get a report as to what they think it might be, and then go back to the mechanic.

Also is your clutch setup correctly??

Dont know if that might cause the noise you refering too... :dunno:

Good luck in any case.

Well he can't hear any noise so I am getting the car back tomorrow. Going to rustenburg with it. I hope it does not break down.

Cois, the e46 has a self-adjusting clutch, the first time you depress the clutch after install it adjusts itself.

Was the dual mass flywheel changed with the new clutch?

Does the 328i petrol use a dual mass flywheel? I thought that was only on the diesels?...

@ksingh.... The thrust bearing/releaser bearing might not be at fault if the noise returned after a while since replacement...have a look for a bent spigot shaft or excessive wear in the fork causing it to contact at an obscure angle...

Good luck...

EVERY car since about the 80s has had a duel mass... but they excuse 'its a duel mass' is still widely used to justify high prices...
