Im currently looking to buy a second hand F30 328i, budget around 250k, i recently read that the 328i motor is not reliable, any advice please. Will be my first BMW, any advice on servicing, it will be my everyday car. And also which maintenance plans to go for. And any tips please.

Hi,

For reliability and everyday drivability, you really need a 320d. Full stop.

In the f30 range best options are the 320d/330d/335i...
320d for great economy and decent performance.
330d for a good balance of performance/economy.
335i if you dislike diesel and not worried about a fuel bill

330d F30 is extremely hard to find, search the net, not many available. If you get your hands on one (clean, decently priced and spec'd) - take it.

320d is more available than the 330d, also a viable option for long term ownership.

I would not recommend the 335i, maintenance costs could prove to be much higher in costs.

Back to your question OP: I owned the 328i for 3 and half years, during my ownership it had a failed turbo which was replaced under motor plan, and went to the dealership a few times for ticking noise in the engine (somehow the engine was a bit rowdy for me at idle). I had bought it as a demo in 2013 at 10 000km, sold it around 75 000km in 2016.

so, should you wish to buy one, make sure that big ticket items were changed before the plan ended. I must say the power was addictive!

Thank you for all the feedback! I changed my mind to the 330D :smilebounce:.
Much more suited for me.

Any suggestions on maintenance plans?

If you buying a 330d out of motorplan or nearing the end of motorplan don’t over stress about an aftermarket maintenance plan. They are solid cars, rather just put some money aside for general maintenance and you’ll be all good.
