Thinking of buying e46 m3 convertible, advice needed!

I enjoy convertibles but not sure in this case. I don't track or race, it's purely for the feel good factor. I wanna keep the car a bit so don't want to be wishing that I bought the coupe instead so I need advice. Does the convertible roofs give any problems? I know the convertible is slower than coupe but can this be significantly felt? Anything else I should know before making a decision?

IMO a //M car should never be a vert, it takes away from the hardcore'ness of the purpose and meaning of the //M badge.

I have been in both hardtop and vert cars, the hard top is better IMO.

Ive driven both the M3 vert and coupe.

My verdict: The coupe feels more planted and handles better in corners. It feels like a drivers car as opposed to the vert which feels more like a cruiser.

Dont get me wrong, the vert is very nice, but it doesnt feel as though you are hunting v8's or rumbling through the forest with your sword drawn.

As a cruiser, Vert is awesome but if you are like me and love to go fast and drive like a moron, the coupe is better.

Hope this helps

Yes I understand, I was worried that if I get a convert I will lose some of the m3ness. Coupe is cheaper, faster and I think I can survive with a sun roof. I was reading on fanatics about a guy with e46 m vert, he did exhaust and chip and he got 20 plus kw on the wheels and I couldn't help but think imagine how quick the car would be if it was a coupe.

i looked for a nice hardtop for the better part of a year, till a found this vert, granted it doesn't feel as planted as the hardtop, but once i put the top down and floored it i was sold i bought the car the same day :inlove:

the thing is i think Kisho135i is after the M3 experience and you just wont get the full experience in the vert... the vert is still a great fast car, but Kisho135i has had plenty fast cars from what i have seen and he is after something different this time...

I wanted to ask about the sat nav in the e46 m is it any good? Would it be something worth looking for?

As a nicely integrated unit, the large screen in the centre console looks cool. The last version (DVD based) can do 3D maps with a firmware upgrade. On some iPod kits, you can see a bit more useful info too, as opposed to the standard "orange text". You can view some of the computer info (e.g. Fuel consumption, limit, etc). You can still get this info on your cluster by scrolling, but it looks so much nicer on the colour screen.

However, I would not pay too much extra for it. As far as basic navigation goes, an entry level Garmin will outperform it in terms of functionality.

i just like the way it looks but 3 out of 4 m3's that i found with sat nav are phoenix yellow and thats not me. I.m looking for alpine white, imola red or leguna seca blue, will take titanium silver if i really have to.

Is ok to buy an e46 m with about 100 000km? Will it last and stay reliable for a long time?

Depends.
If it is a pre '02 coupe that didnt undergo the rod bearing fix, i would stay away. Anything after '03 i guess would be ok even if it passed the 100k mark.
Condition is more important than mileage.
To your original q - i would never exchange my coupe for a convertible
