In the above illustration, item number 13 (Thermostat for EGR cooling
11 71 2 247 723

Only with automatic transmission)....what does it do, can it leak water, and be the cause for loss of water, approx one litre in 2 days.

I found the rear end cracked where the circlip holds the spring valve in place, managed to do a temporary repair, but will ultimately have to have it replaced....the above website quotes 25 UK pounds, what does this cost locally from the dealers, or can it be sourced at independant spares shops.

When i got my E39 530d two and a half years ago i replaced both this thermostat and the normal one. Got mine from the agents but unfortunately cannot remember the price but if i must guess it was probably in the region of R1000. First replaced the normal thermostat and the gauge in the car still did not stick to the centre as it should and only showed normal 12 o'clock on the temp gauge after replacing this one as well.

temp repair decided to start giving way yesterday.

Goldwagen today....R695,oo

What should have been a 30 minute replacement, ended in a 3 hour escapade, with dropped bolts and dropped spanners and sockets, ending up deep in some crevas of the enigine.

alls well that ends well though....now to monitor my DIY for a couple of days to make sure no more leaks.
