The unexpected E36 328i find.

Dropped the E36 off at Wentzel Motorworks this morning for its 130k km service, and a few other small things. Replaced all fluids (Motul of course!) besides the gearbox as the gearbox got fresh oil when the swap was done and all filters including the fuel filter which hadn't been changed in 15 years... Always some cool cars in the shop.

More updates to come next week.

Just picked the car up from having the poly suspension bushings and purple tag steering rack fitted. Had the rack freshened up, and fitted new E46 rack ends, along with new E36 tie rods. They also flushed the P/S system and filled it up with new fluid.

For those wanting to do the upgrade, the E36 P/S lines bolt right up to the new rack, and you reuse the E36 banjo that goes into the rack. Don't use the purple tag rack banjo as it has a restrictor in it. The restrictor is already built into the E36 P/S lines.

The difference in steering feel is ridiculous, the stock E36 was so horrible on centre, there was zero feedback. And you really had to turn the wheel to get any angle out of it.

The purple tag feels much quicker, and the on centre response is fantastic now. Definitely an upgrade that every E36 needs!

So the next thing to tackle was a small coolant leak I've been having, I've been finding little puddles of coolant on the garage floor after driving it before I had the rack and bushings done.

I spent an afternoon trying to find the leak, nothing from any of the hoses or the thermostat housing. Eventually I saw the TINIEST stream of coolant spraying out from the middle of the expansion tank, you could barely see it. So I did a quick Youtube seach, looked easy enough to do myself. I hate bleeding cooling systems, but I will if I have to.

IMG_1700.JPG

Went and bought a new bottle on Friday and took out the old one on Saturday afternoon, but the hoseclamp was toast, and the level sensor had disintegrated and leaked when I tried refitting it to the new tank. Parts shops were closed by then. Annoying. So had to wait until Monday to get a new hose clamp, level sensor and just because, I bought a new bleed screw as well.

IMG_1697.JPG

I thought about converting to the VW Mk5 expansion tank in preparation for future plans, but I wasn't prepared to go down that rabbit hole just yet.

Eventually got everything fitted, no leaks and began the bleeding procedure. Jacked the front end up, turned the heater on full blast and let it go. Gave it a couple of revs every now and then, and topped up the tank. After an hour and a half I still had some bubbles at the bleed screw, so I turned it off and went back the next day. Another hour of bleeding it and no more bubbles on idle. Took it for a 15min drive, no issues, so I'm going to assume its fine 😂

Onto restoring the Mtech door mouldings!

IMG_1615.JPG

(Top is after, bottom is before) My approach to this was fairly simple. Washed them all down with soap and water, bought a pack of scotchbrite pads and went to town. Had a bucket of water and just wet-sanded all the mouldings until I was happy with the finish. I didn't want a smooth finish, just an OEM-like textured finish so the scotchbrite worked really well, as you can see from the before and after photos of the bucket of water I was dipping the pads into.

IMG_1632.JPG

IMG_1631.JPG
Once the finish was good and even, I washed them down again and let them dry.

IMG_1648.JPG

Right before, left after. Pretty damn happy with the finish. Now to do a test spray. Again I was going for an OEM finish, and seeing Jimmy Oakes use Trim Black spray paint when restoring his trims on all his cars confirmed what I needed to use.

IMG_1516.JPG

Managed to get it on Makro online only, no where in store has it. Did a test spray on one of the small trims and was happy, so I did the rest over the course of a few days. Cape Town weather has been very temperamental. These past few weeks.

IMG_1517.JPG

3 - 4 coats and the finish was great. Time to do the rest with my janky "spraybooth" 😂

IMG_1650.JPG

All new clips for all the mouldings too. Be prepared to spend R1000+ on new clips if you're doing the swap. Here's the part number if you need it, the clips are different to the narrow mouldings as I learned.

IMG_1626.JPG

And finally on the car! It was a pretty laborious and time-consuming job, but happy with the end result. I'm going to change the OEM M badge on the front door mouldings though, they look a little "Janjira" to me, even though they're OEM. Will probably get the Motorsport ones.

Also ended up swapping my numberplates around, took the CAA and put it on the Cayenne, and put the CA on the E36. Just to be more period correct 😂 its the little things for me.

Up next: braking. Will be taking off the front bumper this weekend for a cool little development project, and overspending on brake pads 😂 will be changing pretty much everything about the braking system.

Thanks guys!

First piece to the brake upgrade puzzle just showed up.

IMG_1808.jpg

Decided to do the E46 330i brake upgrade for the front, I'll post an update when the rears arrive but I'm sure you can see where this is going. These will be more than sufficient with the bigger 325mm discs and the potentially over-the-top pad choice.

Going to clean them up nicely and give them a coat of silver high temp paint before fitting. Some more parts are showing up next week.

Ended up going with E46 328i rear calipers, as they are bolt-on and allow you to upgrade to a bigger, ventilated brake disc without needing to modify the handbrake assembly.

I also got my second set of 330i front calipers. I ordered both at the same time as they were similarly priced and look to be in the same condition. I just ordered two sets in case one was bad, but they are both good. I’ll be listing the other set up for sale tomorrow if any of the E36 guys are interested. They are 100% bolt on.

Lovely mods
I would love to do the purple tag rack on my E30

Definitely recommend! If you do get one, just have it inspected at a powersteering specialist, these racks are known to start binding up at high mileage and there is no fix for it.

Some more parts are starting to show up, can almost get started on getting the entire braking system sorted. Waiting for a gap in this sh!tty Cape weather to respray the calipers.

IMG_2013.jpg

I may have gone a little overboard on the pads, but I've always wanted to try a set 😃 super excited to see how they perform.

This car is so beautiful

Would be interesting to see how those pads perform on the street

Thanks!

They're very bad for daily driving, they will eat discs up. But I don't ever daily it, will purely be very spirited Sunday morning mountain drives and trackdays. If I still find them too aggressive, I'll do a set of Endless MX72 next.

Sho, where to start. Been a hectic couple of weeks.

My intention was to start on the braking system, but I took a wheel off and realized the shocks, which were still the originals from 1997, had started leaking. Go figure.

I also realized that I was a silly goose and ordered a set of 330i brake lines for the brake upgrade, but for whatever reason, E36's have a total of SIX brake lines. So had to send them back and ordered E36 specific ones instead.

We've just started with some additions on the house so spending R28k on BC's right now and still having to wait 4-6 weeks for them to arrive wasn't really an option.

Picked up a set of FK's that were in stock. This is just to get the car back on the road and the rest of the setup dialed in, I'll order some BC's next year. I had a set of FK's in my Audi 8 years ago and was really happy with the ride quality for a "cheaper" coilover, so wasn't too phased about putting these in for now.

IMG_2041.JPG

First up with the rears. Easy, took me 30mins.

IMG_2044.JPG

At the same time, I did the "while I'm here, I might as well" thing and installed the OEM shock tower reinforcement. Expensive little buggers, R574 a piece. I also got some Meyle HD top mounts, which I forgot to take a picture of.

And now for the fronts.

Again, did the "while I'm here, I may as well" thing and ordered a set of adjustable top mounts, shock tower reinforcement plates and new swaybar end links.

And back on the road. This ride height didn't last very long, a bit too stancey for me and just asking for shyte with JP and his CCT mates. But surprisingly, it never rubbed or scraped at this height which was pretty incredible. And the ride is REALLY good.

A few things have changed since then, but that will come in another update.
