The Rat Rod

This is a story about a little Mini that decided to become awesome.

Her name is Ratex. She was given to me as recompense after a fire.
I was building this;

Those are Kyalamini colours, 3 were built, raced, and died at Kyalami in the 70's. They were competitive but were pushed too hard I suppose. Any way, this happened to the shop where 'Beezul' was being painted;

The nice man who felt bad about the loss of Beezul sourced me Ratex for free. (The world needs more people like this) Johann lost a couple vintage Porsches in the fire too.

Ratex is a 1976 Leyland Mini 1100. Unknown mileage. Trivia; In true Saffa style, the manne at Leyland SA decided that having a different engine block for a different capacity engine like the Poms was stupid (I agree) so they used the same block as the 1275cc engine, a short stroke crank and stacked pistons to create an 1100cc engine. Same 'big bore' and head as the 1275cc. This results in a heavy pistoned asthmatic 1100 engine, just like the Pom long stroke 1100 but cheaper to manufacture. The Poms disagreed with this but that's because they didn't want to admit the dutchmen had a better idea! :p

Personally I think the Poms didn't like this idea because the SA 1100 now had a factory short stroke crank, and we all know that short stroke cranks create sowing machines right? The SA crank is the same as the pukka Cooper S 1071, the little beast that regularly won rallies around the world and ran to 9000rpm.
So with a little jiggery pokery an SA 1100 engine (which costs fuck all compared to a Cooper S 1071) can be made into a wheel spinning sowing machine.

Any way. Having cast aside the idea of building a Kyalamini (The universe said NO and being broke from building the prettiest Shark) I decided that Ratex would become a Rat Rod.
1. It's relatively cheap
2. No one does it in SA
3. It's Fucking Awesome.

Ratex before her transformation;

Right, so the first job was to liberate the breathing of the little beast.

Factory came with a F***** STUPID design for the carb and exhaust manifold. (This is a theme I will be revisiting, the Mini is an incredible design but some things are F****** STUPID). done for added 'cheapness' I guess, but the exhaust obviously heats up the inlet charge and kills performance.

So, the factory carb is a 38mm SU, a little small for a big bore short stroke, but more importantly it comes with a combined inlet/exhaust manifold;

First job was to replace that shit with an HIF44 SU, a big bad ass 44mm side draught carb and a proper SEPERATE long centre branch exhaust manifold.

Boom!

No shit. Just those mods and I could drift the car in corners in 2nd gear.

Removed the factory pizza filter k@k too.

So, the original plan was to race in the pre-77 Historics.
But, like all plans things change, now the plan is to just build a fuck off quick and fun car. (Read: I'm broke)

This means racing ideas out the window and the Super Charger kit is for sale
Super Chargers are too fiddly for my liking. Don't get me wrong, 150HP in a 600KG car would be going Full Retard and mad fun. 250HP per Ton is totally Full Retard.

kit is here if any one wants

Next step was to rip out the red interior.

Then a couple days with sand paper and litres of Aeromotive paint stripper.
That shit is FILTHY! Did the job though. Once down to bare-ish metal
Just add Hydrogen Peroxide, white vinegar and a little salt. Shaken, not stirred. Add to squirty bottle and apply liberally to Mini. Wait 30min. and Voila! Instant Rat Rod.

Interior has been stripped, de-adhesiveised. F****** STUPID! why cover the interior of a car in the fibrous adhesive?!!? Masks and gloves required to remove all that shit!

Also replaced clutch cylinder and water pump and new thermostat. And a new Alternator.
The water pump is a grudge purchase. Here's a lesson for life. Do It Yourself.
The F****** STUPID monkey who installed the alternator tightened the fan belt so much he destroyed the water pump. Que over heating! In the mean time I had refurbed the radiator and fiddled with timing and removed thermostat to cure the over heating.

Please fit supercharger :rollsmile:

NO! I am now convinced that Superchargers are a mugs game. Turbo is the only way. This applies to BMWs and Minis. Way too fiddly.

I'm a Sailor Cois, I swear, also, I'f you've ever worked on a Mini, you'd swear too!

Right, where we're we....

Mini is fast now, new Cobra Monaco racing bucket fitted, windows removed (temporarily), removing paint shaved about 10kg off the car, windows another 10kg. Wheelspins easy. So it was time to make it STOP.
Twin pot alloy calipers and 7.9 inch discs fitted at HUGE expense.
(I have been collecting Mini parts for 10 years and stashing them away in a shed, now they will see the light!)

Oh, and new Gabriel Technomatics all round. Can now almost lifts it's bum in the air if you slam the brakes!!
