The Purpose Of All That Power?

I have a question that's been bugging me. And considering there are a lot of ridiculously fast cars on here I figured this is the best place to ask.

It saddens me to say this, but what's the point of having all that power?

I'd love to get an M car, especially a 335i :praise: but in all honesty, when do you get to use all that power? Even with my little 118i I get frustrated cos I just want to stretch her legs, but spend most of my time in traffic or behind a granny who thinks 40km/h is like hauling ass down the autobahn. It's so frustrating.

I did see an interesting answer to this question from Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear. He said it's not about using that power to race about all the time, it's about knowing that it's there, and you have it, should you need it.

What's your guys' take on this? And of course, all that power is justified if you're taking your car on track days - that goes without saying.

i have similiar thoughts every day in traffic. i think why go buy a 2.0T but you drive slower than a chevy spark. it is annoying to be sitting behind these people with a clear road in front of them.

A 335i isn't a M car.
Technically.......

i found the best balance is to have a daily driver that is reasonably economical and a weekend toy.

that way you enjoy the power and generally use it when you not just running around in traffic......

but that's just my opinion.

its like insurance..., you need to have it .., in case you need it... like alot of things in life.... we get them for odd chance we might need them, or in some cases we think we need it and then hardly use it.

That explains why I have so much of stuff in my garage.... theres a chance i might need them....maybe.

I might not be getting to ridiculous speeds with my car, but i definitely use the power when it is safe to do so. I will admit to going over the speed limit temporarily but thats just me.

Overtaking trucks.....

Wahahaha, that's what I always say! Much safer if you can overtake quickly. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

To the OP its also about the feeling of getting thrown back in your seat for me. Only thing I'm learning is it will never be enough, just want more more more.

To get out of and away from situations quickly. Too many to mention.

The power is there when you need it.

Also for fun :)

Yea yea, you know what I mean.

But I agree. Weekend toy for lekker Sunday runs also makes sense.

trust me when you have had a long day at the office - the drive home with soo much power under your foot is the best feeling, everyone on this forum will attest to the numerous tangibles that make that power soo addictive..........

driving a BMW is sheer driving pleasure - ADD power = Addictive love

Well a 335i engine sounds better than the other 4 cylider engines. Previously with everything from 23i being a six cylinder, most of the engines had a good sound note.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it, I will drive something excessively fast myself when the budget allows it.

This is like asking why I have a huge huge shlong.
Saying its unnecessary, if it wont get used.

Just have a small one.

But let me say, that if I ever need it, its there, in my pants and I know its there, I trust in its abilities do do what it needs to do when it needs to do it.

You follow my point?

Also, on a 118i, you are always stretching its legs. its 118i.

Buy an M3, drive it to work and back for a week, and you will see what the point of all that power is.

"but with great power, comes great responsibility" and the maturity not to try to "tear it" every chance you get.

It's all about the feeling.
I have always wanted a powerful car. That feeling of being pushed back in your seat, knowing you can get up to ridiculous speeds, the sound of a powerful engine. It's an all-encompassing experience, even if you don't and aren't able to use that power 75% or more of the time.

Getting up to the speed limit in a powerful car is WAY more exciting than an average run of the mill car.
Those brief moments of foot flat action, the tyres losing traction and the exhaust making all sorts of sonorous noises makes it all worth it, even if the fuel bill isn't pretty

You know what they say about people who drive BMW's and brag about having huge shlongs?

The word shlort is usually more appropriate :sorry:
