No Benz is as comfortable as a BMW. A Mercedes spokesperson once said that something Mercedes can learn from BMW is comfort. I suppose though I'm speaking about older models as I am yet to climb into the latest plastic on the roads.
As the owner of a 5 and a E i can emphatically say what you are quoting is like one of those Einstein quotes.

The familiar generic look of the Merc makes it look outdated
So the E has generic looks and the 5 does not look like a shrunken 7 at all? Get outta town.

It amazes me that some fanatics will make such strong comments when they probably never driven both.
I own the new 7 and took the e220d for a very extensive test drive making use of much of the tech that was on offer.
I can not compare to the g30 but I am hoping they have improved it over the 7.
For me the e class has the elegance of an s class with the sportiness of the c.
(Have a look at some of the interior pics)
What was amazing was virtually no road noise and all the systems like semi autonomous driving really works like it should. (BTW the car I drove rode on 20" amg wheels).

How did you find the ride? As a hater of all things sporty in what is not a sports car i had the dealer pull out a lower spec 17inch wheeled E200 as that is how i would order it. Found the ride to be just ever so slightly off. I drove my W211 to the dealer and i can't put my finger on it but the ride was not befitting for the car.
Also annoyed that they have now really taken to the BMW way of doing things and EVERYTHING is extra. Even the E400 is saddled with non memory seats.
