The Mean Greenie - 330d

Yeah, I've taken pics.

I made a plan cleaning the injector holes. They were really filthy, no idea how that happens when the washer on the bottom of the injector is supposed to seal onto the face.

Here is a before and after:

And the tool I came up with to clean in there. Took some time, some of them were really shocking, but they are all beautifully clean now ready to accept the very clean injectors, nice.

Now the problem I have, as you probably notice from the above pics is how much dirt there seems to be in the engine!!!!!!!! To be fair, it's on the mating surfaces and not actually in the engine per se. I'm going through and cleaning up as much as I can, but I have also bought some Shell Helix Ultra and HX8 for flushing. The plan is to pour the HX8 through the engine, flushing it right out the sump to try and remove all the dirty oil still in the engine. I will then go ahead and put some clean Helix Ultra in the engine and run that for a few hundred kms before doing another oil change and then another 1000 kms from that.

What do you guys think? My concern is that the dirt goes into the newly built turbo.

Apparently the best/safest way to desludge an engine is oil change with good oil + filter, run for a few hundred kms then another oil change with good oil and new filter again.

That pipe is BMW only, i went on a search a few months back and looked at various scrap yards in Pretoria and Gp none of them had it. cost me R7500 after discount.

Wow, that's crazy. I have found a replacement in Europe for that piece of pipe:

Will most likely order that and have to wait, get the missus to bring it back with her.
Quite a savings off of the local price, you could try Aramex's Global Shopper import service if in future you need to bring in parts relatively quickly without paying the earth for delivery.

Huge advantage is they charge on actual weight only and not volumetric weight like normal courier services do, which can be quite a significant savings with light weight but bulky car parts.

Ok, need some help please. Got the turbo on and all the other bits. Put the new valve cover gasket on and put the valve cover on. Had some strange behaviour from my torque wrench. Battle to tighten the bolts to 15Nm, some did, some didn't. I ended up snapping one of the bolts so now I'm in trouble, it all has to come off and hopefully I can get the broken bit out of the head.

I think I need to pay a visit to Gizmo and get him to do it properly.

Yeah, not trusting my torque wrench very much at the moment.
I'd think there's something more to it, you'd notice the unusual amount of force needed to shear a 6mm bolt head off.

I've had pipes on spanners loosening 6mm bolts and almost never sheared a head clean off, unless it was rusted totally seized in a block or something even then the head normally rounds/spanner slips before it gets to shearing and it needs a huge amount of force.

Maybe they are those use once type of stretch bolts or someone used normal bolts when high tensile should have been used and they have failed from being fatigued.

Called BMW today, a new set of those bolts is cheaper than I thought at just over R 700, but need to be shipped from Germany which will take about a week. I have not read anything about them being single use only so a bit odd.

Ended up undoing everything I did yesterday and inspected the bolts that were over tightened, they were all bent. I managed to get some from a scrap 330d from the local scrappy in Selby, Motor City Auto Spares and will be going back for more tomorrow as it seems the 5 I grabbed off them is not enough.

As for the bolt which broke, luckily for me there was quite a bit sticking out and it came out quite easily.

Now, does anyone near Randburg have a small torque wrench they could borrow me for the evening please? Looking for a max of 20Nm. The odd thing is the bolts didn't feel that tight when loosening them off.

Can't you just buy some high tensile bolts at an industrial supply place, or do they have some special shank or other features?

On the E90+ series if a bolt is painted blue it means they are one time use only bolts.. I dont know if the same applies to the e46 range...

Some very nice work on your car, well done on spannering it yourself

Nope, they are special bolt as below:

Those are used on n42 and n46 motors too.

What is your recommendation for tightening these down? I'm really worried the same thing happens again. I reckon I should just torque them to 10Nm on my torque wrench. Can't seem to find a smaller torque wrench to borrow to get this done.

You supposed to buy new ones as the rubber part degrades and the tappet cover gasket starts leaking.
Buy new ones and torque them to the correct value, don't skimp on these things unless you want to do it twice.

Any DIY guy should have a quality torque wrench, think of it as an investment because it is.

Well done on the work done so far. Unfortunately there is always something silly that happens to hold you back when it comes to this kind of thing.

Why are all the bolts bent is what I would like to know? Doesn't seem good.

As a word of advice, take it or leave it. Maybe ask a forum member who has done the full exhaust on their 330d to take you for a drive before you go that route. It can end up making the car sound like a jet, which is cool at first but can become very annoying quickly.

Thanks for the info, makes sense, you'd think they would state that in the BMW workshop manual. I've got some bolts off a low mileage scrapped car. Will see how it goes. If they too old and tough, then I will bin them.

I do have a quality torque wrench which has served me very well. It's a Britool 1/2" Classic EVT600A. Just had some odd behaviour and left me second guessing my torque wrench.

The bolts were over torqued so hence the bending. With regards the exhaust, all I am doing is the decat downpipe at this stage. Will see how it goes after that.

Much better this evening. The new bolts I got actually had give in the rubber unlike what came off the car. So got the cover installed, torqued and the injectors installed. Not going to plug in the injectors yet until the fresh oil is in and I have turned the engine over a few times to get the turbo primed 100%.

Managed to get all the main vacuum lines in place, only the engine mount ones and the ones that will be blocked off to do.

Pity about the blue......

Tomorrow afternoon finish up the vacuum tubing, inlet manifold on, rad fan back in place and all piping sorted. Hoping to turn it over so that I can get it started and off to Xcede Friday morning. Will just tape up the intake boost pipe heavily so that I can just get it there and back home. Missus will be here Saturday morning so will sort that out Saturday afternoon and finish up the bushes on the front and rear.
