The Legendary E34 M5 - My Pride and Joy

Today I went for my ritual sunday afternoon drive. Why? beacause sheer driving pleasure :)

Was feeling a bit sensitive from the weekends "extra curricular" activities so just needed to indulge in some relaxation. The M5 is great for this.

Here is some induction noise from the glorious S38b36

Excuse the poor picture quality

Still possibly one of the sweetest 6 cylinders around.
Just something about this motor that is just so unbelievably good other than the obvious NA 6 cylinder.
props man! So jealous

Eish. I hope you didn't throw away those 2 front resonators that sit next to each other.

I know it doesn't make any sense, but those 2 have restrictions in them which actually makes the car faster overall.

I now have everything I need to do the final valve adjustments.

Digital micrometer that reads to the 3rd decimal. Or 1 micron.

49 shimms to choose from

And the valve spring compressing tool.

Ill post videos of the sound clips once ive done this. I have the oem system in case I wasnt happy with the sound. However the massive backbox does a fantastic job at muting the sound.

Inside the car its not loud at all. No droning. Ive driven it to work and back a couple of times and am very pleased with it.

I am envious of your shims.
Looks like 40 of them at R300 each that is a fair amount of moola right there.

:)

It took me 2 days to do a total of 10 shimms. Of which I had to re-do 3 of them due to beginners bad luck, aka not focusing.

I am quite surprised at the difference it's made. No the car doesn't feel faster, if anything it feels slower, however everything feels smoother.

Even the exhaust has quitened up. I'm also smelling a cleaner combustion but that could also be from the better spark plug and coil suppressor fitment.

Thanks to Rick I have a neat spreadsheet in which I can record the original clearances, original shim, recommended min and max shim, new shim and new clearance.

Here is a .pdf print of the spreadsheet

Note the intake side is shaded in blue and exhaust side shaded in orange.

Also note the following clearances seemed to have decreased. 9, 16, 23, 24

I imagine this being the oil playing a part in some 10 thou reading error.

Andy that's impressive, seems like Peter is rubbing off on you more than what's good for you...

:cartel:

Keep us posted, I will swing by one day for a spin.

I drove the car today again. First time in a while... My word this engine sounds gorgeous. The induction sound never ceases to impress. I am desperately tempted to road trip to durban and back. Who's in! :)
