Test Drove New M3

Hi guys!

Just got back from my test drive in the new M3 and thought I would share my impressions. I currently own an E92 M3 so I'll base my impressions in comparison to my car...

I drove the car with all its settings set to the Maximum sport + settings.

1. Engine - It really is OUTSTANDING....the car pulls extremely hard from any part of the rev range....you can hear the sounds of the turbos working and the exhaust note is much much better than I had heard in any of the online videos. With that being said, it can not compare to the sound of the V8 obviously. Overall, some people will love it and some will hate it...I for one don't hate it and neither do I love it....but as a trade off for the immense amounts of torque this engine makes, I can live with it!

2. Interior - the seats are awesome....they hug you well through the corners and felt very comfortable, more so than my seats in the E92. I was able to find the perfect seating position and felt like I was "part of the car". As far as the rest of the interior goes, I was disappointed...the plastics used on the dash and centre console felt inferior to those used in the E92. The quality is nowhere near that of an Audi interior, and definitely not what I would expect from a car costing over a million bucks. :thumbdo: This car only had the extended leather, which is why IMO you NEED to spec this car with Full leather so that the dash and door panels etc look "premium". With the full leather the interior will improve drastically.

3. Steering - this was one area I was worried about coming from the hydraulic steering in my E92. I found the steering to be precise and well connected to the road...I think BMW has done an excellent job with this electronic steering and people wont miss the hydraulic one.

4. DCT - I would say the new DCT felt smoother and marginally quicker than the one found in my E92, the paddle shifts were great. My only disappointment was the downshifting...although the DCT does blip the throttle when downshifting, there was no ROAR that you get from the E92's V8 with downshifts...downshifts in the new M3 are quiet and too 335 like :thumbdo:

5. Handling - the car definitely felt stiffer and lighter through the bends than my E92...the car had immense grip and definitely had less body roll....it's a winner

6. Heads up display - the heads up display was perfect...non intrusive and now shows, Navigation, speed limit, and rev counter as opposed to just the travelling speed. Awesome feature!

Conclusion - Overall this new M3 left me smiling and wanting to drive it more. It may not be as theatrical as the outgoing V8, but improvements to the handling and engine make this new M3 a worthy successor. I for one had been worried that the new car would not meet my expectations and that with all the technology in the new model it would lose some of its "Mness" if that makes sense...but for those of you who are worried...DONT...the car is awesome.:thumbs::thumbs:

I concur with your sentiments.

Especially in the sound department ... it sounds way better than what it does on the videos and surprised me a bit.

Floor it in any gear and from whatever rev and it just goes .. we were doing in excess of 230 frequently without even noticing the speed as it just gets there so quickly and effortlessly :inlove::inlove:

Was sound with windows up or down? Just remember the simulated sound through the speakers :fencelook: Still, must have been awesome!

Salespeople maintain that it is actual sound that is filtered/pumped/amplified into the cabin as opposed to entirely fake sounds.

Either way it sounded awesome from inside and at full tilt the exterior noises are not too bad either ... no V8 howl but still a nice sound.

Sound was with both the windows open and closed...in the E92 the sound is predominantly coming from the engine whereas in the new M3 the sound was distinctly behind me coming from the exhaust....
