Hi all,

How acurrate is this temp reading on the OBC? I know mine went coecoe for 3 days last year April and showed me anything from -50 to -150. Just want to know because the reading started at 4 degrees in garage this morning and then went down to -2 as I drove to work.

I think it was chilly enough for -2 deg this morning. I have a idea that it should be accurate but never use it until came this morning that it is going below the 3 deg mark and then also because of last years errors and things that came up and just went back to normal. But ja, then this morning at 5:45 am it was -2 deg in the Samrand area in Centurion going to work.

-3 Deg C indicates the possibility of 'black ice' on the road in Europe, hence the warning

I remember a friend doing a comparison between the OBC ambient temperature gauge and the actual temp. He used a thermocouple outside the window and compared the readings. The resolution on the OBC was much lower than the thermocouple but the readings correlated very well. It was on his dad's 540i E39.

But your discrepancy is probably due to a faulty sensor...

Is your temp sensor in the right place. On one of my previous cars (E39), the clips broke and the previous owner strapped the sensor inside the wheel arch/bumper. When the engine warmed up, the reading was too high  I eventually figured out why and moved it to the right place and it provided much more realistic readings.

Also, check the wiring and plugs/contacts going into the sensor.

Where does the Temp Sensor sit for the E36? Wheel arches? I suspect I might have a problem as every now and then I get a warning "ping" then the reading goes -38 Celsius.

For an E36 the thermometer sits in your passenger side brake duct. Your sensor is faulty, same thing happened on mine, every now and again it would go mental, and then a while later it would be fine. You need to replace yours.

A garage is warmer than outside, so i think it should go down when get on the road.

Dark clock and OBC usually just means that the bulbs across the top of the OBC are burnt out. Seems unlikely that all four bulbs would go at once, so you may have a more serious problem.

Stick your finger up through the hole below the OBC and pop it out. You have to pull hard, and a putty knife around the edge to get the bumps to snap out of their recesses and let go is sometimes helpful. The bulbs are in little black twist-out sockets across the top of the display. Check them with an ohm-meter to see if they are burnt out.

Thanks Spy 007.

This is on a 1997 528i E39.....
Testing the whole cluster shows everything works. I have a pixels clock on my radio display in the centre of the vehicle?

Maybe that is where it should be?

Happy Beeming!!
