Hi Guys,

So with the sale gone through on my E46 330i and my immigration visa declined. I need to find another car. Choices where between the G5 GTI and E90 330d. I have test driven these cars yesterday, G5 GTI is out, i prefer the 330d...

What are common faults on these cars?
What should i look for when checking them out?
When driving, how should the turbo sound?
etc? etc?

I'm looking for an 07 model upwards, with some mplan left on it so below 90 000km. Must have sunroof and xenon's, black leather, and MUST be sport pack.

Thanks In Advance!!

I drove a 330d auto (2006) from new to 90,000km.

One of the best cars ever, I had 2 problems, (1) radiator leak and replaced under M/P and (2) glow plugs at 80,000 km. Other than this, I always drive hard and you can not get a better ratio of performance vs economy.

Oh, by the way, it did use about 500ml oil per 1,500km, apperantly within tolerance according to BMW.

WTF? how could that be in spec? my 2004 330d with 220k on the clock does not use that even in between services..

Oil usage, it's an E90 thing! :nonono:

Both my E46 330i's as well as E90 330i used some oil. My E46 330d didn't use any oil up to 155k km when sold and currently my E90 330d haven't used any oil in the 10k km I've owned it.

Oil usage i can deal with, its not really a problem just a little effort.

Problems, tell me about them problems? Should i just go buy a G5 GTI? :roflol:

I had a GTi V and an E46 330d at the same time and it was very difficult to choose which car to take in the morning. It will at the end come down to your own personal choice. I had no problem with my GTi or my E46 330d or my current E90 330d (so far).

Sorry, not much help here I guess. If you have a family then the E90 would probably make more sense, if you're on you're own then the GTi might be more fun.

Took a GTI and 330D for test drive yesterday, preferred the smile the 330d gave me.

Ahh well, what do you think of this?

2007
330d Sportpack 99 800km. Mplan till 100k km so 200km left. :blab:
Silver with Black Leather and Silver trimmings.
18 inch Msport wheels. Sunroof. No Xenons (I want xenons)
R200k.

Not a bad price, but you'll obviously going to take a knock in 200km's time; diesels are just worth nothing come trade-in time out of mplan.

Mine's exactly same as above, only white and 2008 with 99 400km. So my mplan is also on the way out:thumbdo: At least it was serviced on 98 000km.

Im thinking of extending mplan. I would like to... Being my first Diesel and an auto, im a bit scared.

Rather look for one with less kilo's on and some mplan left. You're going to pay at least R20k for 20 000km extension. Not worth it on a 2007 model.

Go with the 330d. If it put a bigger smile on your face, then that says everything.

Funny how resale not good when you trading in, but try find an affordable used 330d - impossible. Makes no sense!

This is the only one within my budget with the lowest Kilo's... Im still looking, but nothing new has been posted anywhere. I have checked, Autotrader, Gumtree, Carfind. Anywhere else?

No question, 330d, the best drivers car in diesel format.

When I questioned the oil usage, they showed me the manual (BMW dealers) that 500ml per 1,000km is withing spec and will only start any formal investigation once it uses more.

I also had the E46 manual (tuned) never a day's hassles (only problem was power was down and was quickly diagnosed as faulty airflow meter)

The E90 330d pre facelift still have a lot of potential to be tuned
