Take care of your engine

Good morning all,

We see some seriously abused engines and some of it is purely because the service intervals are too far apart.

Regardless of the manufacturer's recommendations, please at least change the oil and oil filter every 15 000KM (petrol) and 12 000KM (diesel). Even if the car is still in Motorplan, you can have it serviced inbetween the scheduled services - you'll just have to pay cash.

It's sad to see how many cars just come out of Motorplan and then their engines are sludged up and a mess, because they've only seen clean oil 3 times in a 100 000KM.

Hope this tip will rescue numerous engines from a slow death.

Blessings

i generally service cars once a year because they dont do a lot of mileage, except for one or two which get used everyday, and those get their services as recommended.

I do my cars every 12 months or 12000kms whichever comes first.

Our old pajero at the holiday house gets serviced every 2 or 3 years depending if my dad remembers to get it done, but it only does like 300 to 500 kms a year in December...

I have a question regarding servicing on the diesel. I noticed that if you drive a diesel hard, the service interval drops quicker. Why is this so?

From my understanding, the service intervals/urgency is calculated by your driving style and not a specific KM range like in the past. So if you drive like a granny it would take longer for your next service. If you drive would a lead foot then that service is gonna come quick.

Then my foot must be on the road as I drive because I had my car serviced in dec, now have 2000 until next. I did not even cover 7000

You can check how clean the oil is by opening the the egine oil cap and wipe the back of the cap with your finger. New oil should be almost gold in colour.

Smartiesman service indicator works on fuel consumption...

if you running the car hard then more fuel will be used and the oil should be changed sooner so the OBC uses fuel consumption to calculate when the next service should be not the KM

Petrols also do this :)

long changes are fine if the right oil is used and you make sure you change it on time... problem comes in where people dont change on time or do low mileage and the oil sits in the engine for years...

you should change your oil when the obc tells you or once a year which ever comes 1st...

doing extra changes wont hurt anything so do it if you can

Its based on amount of fuel used, so you drive harder, use more fuel, equals lower service interval.this is as far as I know, might be wrong

Makes sense cause I had some good mileage before my service but in the past month, I went to back and forth to PMB and hard driving and now the car is due and front tyres are gone too :nonono:
