When i got my 2003 E39 530d auto a year ago i took out the swirlflaps the same day i got the car. Read any UK forum and you will find that they urge you to remove them as soon as possible in order to prevent damage from flaps coming loose and destroying engines/turbos'/cats. Can't go wrong by removing them. Funny enough the 2003 X5 auto does not have flaps!!

no pollen filters, taking covers off, removing intake, cleaning intake, reinstalling intake, all easy shit, but those filters are a bitch to get them to lock in place properly

Thanks for the heads up. I modified my pollen filters about 6 months ago.
I used 15mm motorcross bike air filter foam. Was a bit of a mission removing the OEM concertina style paper stuff. I then cut the foam to fit into the gap where tho old paper stuff was. Used black "car" silicone to glue it in. Applied some WD40 to catch the dust etc. Now have clean-able K&N style pollen filters. Will post some pics of the finished article, looks like a factory part.

Thread revival :fencelook:

I'm looking at removing my swirl flaps and probably replacing them with imported blanks, unless someone around here can help out with other advice?

Any updates as to OP's swirl flap situation?

Greatly appreciated

I've ordered a set from:
http://www.i6automotive.co.uk/

Decent prices and delivery was quick and reasonable for the price.
The alluminium ones are abit pricey after converting to R's but apparently the plastic ones are just as good and will do the job.

Great site, thanks

Those prices, are they per swirl flap blank or per set of how many? :fencelook:

The prices are per swirl flap, you will need 6 blanks hence why I say the alluminium ones will work out pricey.
Also, you need to confirm which size you need (22mm or 33mm). I've ordered both sizes just in case so as soon as I've fitted mine I should have a spare set of either 22mm or 33mm.
