SUV Decisions

The X3M comp is nice, but they left the older gen dash in, which is annoying for the price you pay. It would be ok off-road but the ride quality would be terrible.

Go with the Velar, looks good and great off-road imo. You would enjoy it on and off-road.

Go big! G63

He absolutely hates them. If I'm being completely honest, I don't get whats so special about G Wagons, they don't appeal to me really. All I see is you paying 3 Million for a car that legit looks like a ship container on wheels. I don't really like it tbh, I wouldn't spend that much. The Urus doesn't even appeal to me even though its a Lambo, I won't spend that much on an SUV even if I had that amount of money. But if I did, I'd buy a Ferrari GTC4Lusso V12, even though its not really an SUV, but amazing car.

My dad bought a RR sport. Its such a nice place to be in.

We were set on a GLE but had a horrible sales experience.
Land Rover Bedfordview treated us much better.
They literally gave us the keys to a RR sport for almost a week, no questions. Sold us

Plus the car is much nicer and feels bigger than the merc

Range Rover Sport is a honestly a nice car. We had the 2016 SVR and it was an absolute monster, we actually regret letting it go even though it drank fuel hectically.

The joke is that the G63 is a Toyota Venture that went to private school

How does the Velar compare to a Sport in terms of space bud? If not too much of a compromise then the Velar would be great. It looks very sexy too.

Otherwise I think value for money in his price range would be the Sport SDV8 like the one below:
https://www.autotrader.co.za/car-for-sale/land-rover/range-rover-sport/sdv8/25336891

The X5 M50d is brilliant but I'm sure that all variants under the Range Rover banner outshine it in terms of comfort and off road capability. Could be wrong.

The Sport is just a little bit slight bigger than the Velar, it isn't much of a big difference though if I'm being honest. For me, the Velar looks better than the sport. I think at this point the Velar is the best option.

Don't get wrong, I love the sport. Its just that for my dad, having previously owned a Sport SVR, he wouldn't want a sport thats below the SVR. So if he had to get another Sport, it would have to be the facelifted SVR. But I see your point, the SDV8 is an absolute beast of a car, its quite efficient.

Very true, I guess the Germans aren't as good as the Rovers, Cruisers and Jeeps when it comes to offroad.

I can vouch for the excellent sales service from JLR Group.
A few years back, I was looking at a Jag XE 20d at Bryanston JLR.
The salesperson told me to take the car for the weekend and do as much mileage as I want.
All I had to do was park my car in their basement, sign a piece of paper (I think I was responsible for just a small excess if there was any insurance claim on the Jag) and drive off.
I was wearing my running clothes and sweating when I walked into the dealership and they did not hesitate to offer me the car for a weekend test drive.
I ended up buying an F30 320d instead, given that it was a better car, but JLR still invited me to a track day at Gerotek to drive the Jag E-Pace a few months later!

JLR honestly do go all out for their customers. Like when we had the SVR, they use to always invite us for events and they use to always go all out for us. Even now that we've sold the SVR, they still do invite us for special events and stuff. I've never been treated this well at BMW or any other brand like how JLR treated us.

The most capable and most durable is the Land Cruiser. It's also understated and blends in. If you want to show money and make a statement, then Range Rover. The Autobiography is ridiculously overpriced for what you get, IMO.

Demo X7?

The Land Cruiser is honestly the most reliable from our options. I didn't mean Vogue Autobiography which way overpriced, I meant the Velar SVAutobiography, which is basically the SVR version of the Velar. Its around 1.7 for a demo.

The X7 is a beautiful car, but its just way too big for us and it won't have the best resale value thats for sure.

I also had a great experience with Jag Bryanston, but everywhere else in GP is HORRIFIC including HQ. Merc is another which is hit and miss - but there are more good dealers to choose from.

All things considered you need to try the Range IMHO. If it was my money I wouldn't go for any of the M, AMG or SQ (if available) models considering he has an F10 M5. The only reason to buy one of those is if you are forced to have one vehicle that does it all which doesn't sound like the case. Buy the diesel versions and move on if he has a specific preference. The only one on your list I would run far away from is the Track Hawk.

My experience shopping for Landcruisers a few years ago:

Brand new: R850k
Used with 100000km R799K
Used with 300000km R599K

And they sell
OK I am exaggerating but they retain value better than anything else listed and they're in high demand.  :roflol:

I guess there's always a few of those horrific dealerships around. Here in Durbs I deal with SMG Umhlanga and Supertech Durban mostly. They always do the best they can when it comes to deals but in terms of service, I'd say Supertech is better to deal with. I might be moving to PTA next year to do my honours, so I'd have to change dealerships, I've heard many good things about Auto Bavaria Midrand, so maybe I'll go to them when my M240i needs a service or something.

Having had the SVR, its safe to say that Range Rover never disappoints when it comes to quality and class. I guess it wouldn't make sense to get a high performance suv considering we keeping the M5 for now, it wouldn't be practical at all. He doesn't only want to use it on long trips, but he also wants to use it on a daily basis and I think the Velar D300 will be a good option. He used the M5 on a daily basis ever since we sold the SVR, and he realised that its not the kind of car he wants to daily. He bought it as something for himself that he could enjoy every now and then and have fun with, and by using it as a daily, to him its kind of losing its purpose. So he wants that to be his special car that he takes out over the weekend or on special occasions and stuff. No doubt though, the M5 is extremely comfortable and it does well, we took it to Knysna and Sun City last year and the ride was good and it had space, but considering we travel a lot, we'd need a suv like the Velar or so that would be much more efficient and suited for the roads.

Thats for sure, the Cruiser will have the best value and they'll outlive the other options.

Understood about not wanting to get a Sport below the SVR bud.

I think the Velar SVAutobiography is the best option then.

I guess, but anything can happen, you never know. I'm actually gonna go test drive a few cars in the next week or so, I'll definitely check out a sport though, if there's one at a good price, then why not.

So, a few days back I posted this thread for help on deciding an SUV for my old man.

Over the past few days we went and checked out a few of them. Had a look at the Land Cruiser, the Q7 and the Velar. After having a look at the velar yesterday, he just knew it was the car for him and they even had a few low mileage good spec'd ones on the floor.

So he confirmed, he's taking one of these Range Rover Velar's.

Just a few facts about the car. Its a 2019 model with only 11000km on the clock, its the just below the top of the Range P380 280kw supercharged V6 Petrol HSE R-Dynamic version. It has almost all the extras which includes the meridian surround sound system, Matrix LED Signature lights, Surround Camera System, Configurable Dynamics, 360 Degree Parking Aid, 10-Way Seats with Driver Memory and of course a Sliding Panoramic roof. Its silicon silver with black interior. They had a brand new D300 Diesel for slightly just more in the same colour but the SE model and without as much extras and also it had the white seats which we not a big fan of.

We are so excited to get it, we'll be bringing her home hopefully by the end of next week, but in the meantime, here are a few pics of the new addition.
