Hi Guys,

So after receiving a complaint from my wife about her being 'not right' on the road, i decided to take it for a drive and check it out for myself. :fencelook:

The car has a huge amount of oversteer when going around the bend whether it being left or right.

The car is 2002 318i auto with 182 000kms on the clock. When i got the car a couple of months ago, i replaced the front shocks, and control arms.

I recently also did the wheel alignment.

Please advise me on where i can get this car checked up in Durban as everyone knows that Durban has its fair share of 'professionals' around.:ty:

Thanks

Please define "oversteer". I can't imagine you and your wife drifting around every corner with tyre smoke everywhere.

If the rear feels loose then it is most probably the rear shocks as moranor mentioned.

You might as well replace the rear trailing arm bushes as well.

at a guess i would say the rear shocks need replacing now...

Rear trailing arm bushes are a weak point I would replace those

I can offer Meyle or Powerlflex replacements on those can also offer a high quality shock replacement

Have a look on the side for pricing:

Yes, the car completely loose.

Even changing lanes on the freeway is a shelp.

Yes, the car completely loose.

I would also be very keen on a solution as I haven't gotten around to problem solve. Changed overnight for me after doing the control arms. Thought it might be wheel alignement as it tends to pull to the sides when hitting small bumps in the road

Hi DBN,,

Not completely clued up with your model, but does the steering knuckle use a rubber connection where it connects to the steering rack? I assume that it would be similar to e30 and e36...

I would say that rubber needs to be inspected - it should be located infront of the driver, just coming out of the fire wall into the engine bay and then to the steering rack. Have someone turn the steering wheel while you check if any cracks open up.

You can ask Trip3 what happens when that rubber [email protected] my bet.....I am sure you not getting the right feedback due to this little loop hole.....

Hope it helps....keep us posted as to what the problem is or was....would be interested to know.

This is exactly what is happening, i must admit i did the wheel alignment last week and car feels must better but it tends to pull to the sides when hitting small bumps in the road.

So what do i check next?

The RTAB's are fine together with the shocks but i will change that as soon as funds become avaialble:idea:

The wheel alighment was out, the rear axle was sitting at a positive angle and the front toes were incorrect. After that was rectified the car was quiet noticeably feeeling better.

Getting there slowly..... time permitting

Does one need to do wheel alignment if u replace just the rear shocks ?

changing rear shocks does not change alignment angles but it is a good idea to get it checked anyway...

Moranor u say not needed but to be safe just have it checked I'm sure when u do replace the rear shocks and get someone to check, the place will tell u that u will need to or that the aligment is out

in general relay as little as possible on workshops to point out issues fact is most often they have very little time with your car to find and resolve problems...

make sure you know where the alignment numbers should be many shops will not actually align to spec and just take your money...
