Cape Town – To define a supercar is almost impossible; some, like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, are not particularly fast. Others, such as the McLaren MP4-12C, are surprisingly small. But each has a presence, almost a self-awareness, that leaves you in no doubt you are looking at a very special car.

Perhaps it’s because these cars are, without exception, hand-built by craftsmen who take immense pride in their creations, and who give about as much of a damn what they cost as do the enthusiasts who buy them.

Which explains the sense of occasion when more than 50 automotive aristocrats and their owners gathered at the Table Bay Hotel in the Waterfront on Sunday for the inaugural run of the Cape Town Supercar Club.

They ranged from a tiny Lotus Exige (“You don’t so much get in as put it on”) to a monolithic long-wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantom with almost enough rear legroom to park the Exige in.

Led by TV personality Marius Roberts in a Jaguar F-Type Coupé and including a brand-new Lamborghini Huracan, the supercar convoy literally stopped the traffic when they growled, howled, snarled or – in the case of the Rolls-Royce sweep car – wafted out of the Waterfront to stretch their legs down the N1 and over Du Toit’s Kloof before adourning to the Val de Vie wine and polo estate in the Franschhoek valley for a decadently late breakfast.

A PASSION FOR FINE CARS

The Supercar Club was started by Durban businessman Ashok Sewnarain, founder of IBV International Vaults, who discovered that many of his safety-deposit customers shared his passion for fine cars of all brands. So he went beyond the concept of a ‘car club’ to form an association of supercar owners that’s as much about the lifestyle as it is about the machinery.

Sewnarain said the Supercar Clubs were already up and running in Durban and Sandton, with more planned for London, Dubai and Singapore, targeting membership of more than 1000 in South Africa alone.

He explained that members – in addition to social events such as this – would be invited to take part in track days and advanced driving courses on some of the world’s iconic circuits. They would also be offered special discounts on accessories, tyres and insurance for their cars, while their partners received automatic membership of the Partners Club, with a host of lifestyle benefits.

In addition, members would be able to download a special mobile app, which will hook them into the Supercar Club network worldwide and a ‘virtual showroom’ where they would be able to buy and sell exclusive vehicles with confidence.

TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Sewnarain and club manager Marc Rousseau aren’t shy to think big - the next Supercar Club run, on 21 September in Durban, will take the form of a charity parade of 200 supercars, each with an orphan in the passenger seat and escorted by police, helicopters and motorcycle riders.

The Guinness World Record judges will also be in attendance, because club members and their friends will be asked to pledge donations, which will be distributed to the club’s four adopted charities - Child Welfare South Africa, the Sunflower Fund, Unicef and IBV Children’s VIP Day. The aim is to collect more than R1 million, and set a world record for the most money raised it a car parade.

The IBV Supercar Club, with branches in Johannesburg and Durban, is gearing up to drive a Guinness World Record supercar parade in Durban on the 21st of September 2014.

It aims to reach a Guinness world record of raising R1 million for a charity through a parade of over 200 supercars down North Beach.

‘You can get involved in this groundbreaking event by donating your time and the gift of a ride in your supercar to an orphaned child,’ invites Marc Rosseau, the MD of IBV Supercar Club. ‘Supercar owners are invited to play their part in making history.’

The parade will be escorted by Harley Davidson & Ducati Bikers, and led by a helicopter formation and special police escort.

APPARENTLY SA is a third world country. The poverty gap is undeniable and the issues it faces are clear, but you would forgive me for questioning its third world status if you had browsed through my e-mail inbox over the past week. It is full of press releases about a supercar launch, a supercar gathering and a supercar rally. We have that many people spending money on exotic supercars? The answer, it seems, is yes; and with summer having arrived, owners across the country have pulled the dust covers off their precious possessions.

SA is to be the scene of an attempt to set a Guinness record for the largest supercar gathering. That’s the largest gathering in the world! This Sunday, the International Bank Vaults (IBV) Supercar Club is calling for more than 200 supercar owners to drive down North Beach road in Durban.

Nedbank says SA has more than 300,000 individuals who either earn more than R1.5m a year or have more than R5m in investable assets. Many of these are the supercar owners who will be gathering for the event and who not only hope to set that world record, but also raise more than R1m for charity. Each supercar owner at the event will be joined in the passenger seat by an orphaned child, making this massive display of wealth also an exercise in philanthropy.

"We are calling all supercar owners to join us at 7am at the Pavilion Hotel for this ground-breaking event by donating their time and a gift of a ride in their supercar to an orphaned child," says Marc Rosseau, manager of IBV Supercar Club.

Not just orphans will enjoy the supercar lifestyle this weekend. Plenty of rogues will be out in exotic vehicles too as the annual Rogue Rally gets under way. This one is less philanthropic, with supercar owners travelling around the country from Johannesburg to Cape Town all in the name of a bit of fun. If you remember the movie Cannonball Run, you should get the idea.

But the "Rogues" will still play their part, as there will be a big auction in Cape Town to raise money for the J9 Foundation. This is the charity of rugby star Joost van der Westhuizen who is battling the effects of motor neurone disease. All proceeds from the auction will go to the foundation, and I am quite sure many of the "Rogues" do their bit to give back to SA.

The rally itself will start at Daytona Group in Sandton, Johannesburg, at 2pm on Sunday. One of the stars of the show will be a R22m McLaren P1. This exclusive hypercar is not officially available in SA, being made in left-hand drive, but there is always a wealthy individual who can register one at their Monaco apartment, of course.

The P1 will be joined by a who’s who of the supercar world, including a Ferrari 458 Speciale, a Lamborghini Huracan, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and an Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, to name a few. In total, more than R230m worth of exotic metal will travel the highways and byways of SA covering more than 2,800km between September 21 and 27. During this time owners will be doing what "Rogues" do best; driving fast cars, partying into the wee hours, competing in special events and generally living the life of the rich and famous in five-star venues and the best locations SA has to offer.

Whether it is in the name of charity, a world record or just feeling that need for speed, it all seems good fun.
