Howdy Folks,

I've been a BMW fan since as far back as i can remember, my favourite of all being the z3 M coupe, however, even though i've been through a dozen cars in my life, i've never actually owned a BMW, which brings me to my point.

I'm looking to buy a BMW for around R65k-R70k, I've been looking at at E39s and E46s, I need something with a bit of a kick to replace my dearly departed WRX. My question is, are there decent 330i/530is to be had for that price and how to they compare performance wise with a Subaru WRX?

Thanks a mill.

A WRX Subaru has 200+kw of turbo power, only the E46 M3 or E39 M5 can compare in terms of power and delivery and I doubt you will find an example of those for around R70k. If you do you won't want to buy it in any case.

it wasn't an STI, just a regular WRX, and a 1st gen at that, power output was 160kW

You won't regret going for the E46's communicative chassis. I would stay away from the 4-Cylinder petrols if you want some shove.

Forget the E46, once you drive a E39 540i (legend) you're hooked 4eva. The 540 smokes both E36 & E46 M3

e46 330i individual is what you want.

But you will be looking at spending 100K +- for a decent one.

For a 65 -75k price range, you are looking at the 325i. Once again, you want individual package. This includes the Mtech sports pack and other awesome goodies.

You know a BMW individual was looked after because the owner had to pay a nice premium for it and it was custom designed to his needs, often an enthusiast or car fanatic. Hence the individual title.

Also it looks the best.

Don't rule out a clean e36 328i, much more of a driver's car than a e46 or e39. Plenty more modding potential too!

And of course, why do people always forget about the fuel of Satan...

a slightly modded 330d/530d will give you more torque then an E39 //M5

Hi, I just passed a dealer in Pretoria and saw a 530i E39 - really great looking with some nice wheels. It was marked at R57 995!

The shop was closed so I didn't bother to stop, but if you'd like me to check it out, let me know. I could take some pics and send them to you. I pass there every now and then.

For that kind of money, this car looked great - of course it has to be checked out properly to determine if it was well looked after in terms of servicing and general maintenance.

dayum! the individuals seem to be quite a bit more expensive than the regular E46s, it appears that even a 318i individual is out of my budget.

Aren't the diesels vulnerable to that swirl flap issue that you read about all over the interwebs?

I'm not particularly keen on the e36 4 door, aesthetically speaking.

They can be removed

Dont mind them Mo,

the young whippersnappers have no clue :biglol:

Yep - they usually come back after 3 months asking for more power at the reef from their x30i motors and then spend R20k for a 2kw gain :fencelook:
