Hey guys!

This seems to be a common problems on all Z3 models, specially the m coupe's....... I had my car checked today and all seems to be ok! but it happened to my fathers car last year Z3 3.0 roadster, The rear bracket holding the diff was torn and boot floor was tearing.

was browsing the Z3Mcoupe forum and came accros this.....

Had a persistent creaking noise coming from the rear of my '99 M Coupe (70k miles) for a long time now and naturally attributed this to plastic interior in the boot area. But yesterday the creaking rapidly got bad enough to worry me and think that something didn't sound right. You could hear the creaking as you were slowly moving off in first and slowly stopping.

Anyway, I remembered the widely discussed topic (roadfly, bimmerforum, bimmerfest, etc.) of sub floor or sub frame failures in a huge number of M Coupes and decided to have a look under the toolkit and the jack.

I found a massive tear and a number of failed spot-welds (apparently this is a cheap and unacceptable way to weld such a component and a MIG or similar weld should be performed. I am not an engineer, but that’s what I’ve read elsewhere).

I've got pictures, but seem to be unable to upload for some reason. If anyone can help with the pics - let me know, there are 3 ~150kb files that clearly demonstrate the failure. SCARY, you have to see this and check your M Coupe.

I will try to take it to my local dealer (Hexagon of Highgate in North London) and insist they write a letter to BMW GB requesting they cover the full cost of fixing the problem of a safety critical element of the vehicle.

Early signs are very hard to pick up. First signs are the failing of the spot welds, it is bearly noticable and often happens under the sound insulation... so unless it become really noticable as in teh pics above you will have to remove the sound deadening to see it. Seems to be an issue with all Z3s, makes no difference on year or how its been driven. In the top pic you can see teh two spot welds that have failed.

Wheel spins cannot be good for it though. Really bad design. There is a kit you can buy that beefs up teh subframe or a good body ship can fix.

this is also an issue with the e46 M3 like mine. Not sure what BMW SA's official stance is on fixing these problems. If anyone knows please let me know?

This was a class action in the states. With the E36 and E46 aswell.

Good luck with BMW SA. I think you are very little chance of comepack on a 8 year old car.

Apparently BMW (Overseas) did fix the problem free of charge but that was only if the car was still under Motor plan.....

Found a letter sent from BMW to someone in overseas not sure which country,

Ya i've got no chance of getting BMW SA to sort mine out. Surely after 8 years with no problems the car is fine though.

I heard about aftermarket gussets from the states that you can have welded on the rear subframe to eliminate this problem. Anyone heard of this being done locally?:mmm:

I good body shop will carry out that type of work. Just get loads of pics and research what you want done.
