It's leaking water from somewhere just underneath the pulley and if you jiggle the pulley there is a little play. In short, no idea :flyfun:

It sounds like your Waterhousing is cracked. Its made out of plastic and its common to crack.Try and replace it with a Metal housing.

If it happens to be the Pump I would recommend replacing the rest of the Cooling system aswell. If its never been replaced its only a matter of time before Thermostat,Thermostat Housing,Radiator hoses give in.Keep an eye on the plastic Radiator bottle neck aswell cause they tend to get brittle and crack. In their fragile state they can also break if the Radiator hose is fitted and tightened.
While you at it it would be good measure to replace the Timing Belt aswell cause they are easily overlooked and forgotten.

The Haynes manual recommends replacement of rubber pipes every 5 years regardless of condition. I doubt if the Dealerships ever does that.
Seems like an over kill to me, but if reliability is in the top 3 of your tick sheet, it is probably a must.
I replaced the pipe that connects the expansion tank and the thermostat housing from a known aftermarket supplier. It lasted a year before the O-ring seals became hard and started leaking.
It was subsequently replaced with a BMW OEM part.

It just takes one freakin pipe or (as in your case) a water pump to sour up a holiday :argh: :

Yip - I replaced all 8 water hoses on the 318i, along with all the other usual cooling systems parts just be 100% sure. Planning the same for the 330 shortly, already got a quote from the dealers for the whole lot - R10 000 ! But probably the right way to go in the long run.

Sorry for the highjack !

@ Julz - timing belt, don't they have chains ?

I'm not talking about the Timing chain.I was refering to the Accesory drive belt. a.k.a Serpentine belt,Fan belt,Alternator belt.It runs of the crank and connects the Alternator,Waterpump/Fan and Powersteering pump. The Aircon belt is seperate.
I understand the confusion thou,I should've used a better Term.
