To answer those who might give me an obvious answer the car is manual and has been ever since production. Im not sure if this is how they came from production but, my senses are pointing otherwise...

The clusters are standard and the "extra functionality" is simply not used on the manuals. That way they don't need to manufacture separate clusters for the different models and can standardise on a single cluster per range. That's aside from the versions (Hi and Lo) sometimes found in the same range, eg. Hi is used on E39 M5, whilst Lo is used on the smaller models.

Thanks for the answers, I suppose when this was decided on in that boardroom in the 80's the entire panel who approved this method must have said " Lets leave this, we will confuse the living hoots out of our German cousins in years to come"... Dudes had a crazy sense of humour

I Ricky, its been giving me endless issues with the temperature gauge flying all over the place when I'm on the road. It has 2 little 3v batteries which needs to be replaced in order to get it sorted. Do take note that these small little rechargeable batteries has been there since the vehicle came from production and It needs to be replaced at some point.

The gauge jumping all over the place is a typical symptom of the batteries going.

My instrument on the E34 535i has a typical E34 problem and that is the gauges die, lights flash and LCD display dies.
It is due to capacitors leaking and they need to be replaced.
