Stone chips moan chips...

Get a Le Mans blue 3 series and we talk again about stonechips.

The primer is white/cream, so everytime you wash your car you end up whimpering away...

Polishing makes it even worse, as the dried compound ends up filling the chips and looking worse...

I'm contemplating a re-spray and clear bra...

BTW, it's not our bad roads...it's the crappy rules on our roads. Especially with regards to heavy duty vehicles hauling gravel / cement. They spill that crap all over the place...

I avoid sitting too close behind other cars, especially trucks. But I do find that my E90 is so much more susceptible to picking up nasty stone chips than most cars. Didn't know about the paint issue, but I think also the shape of the nose and bonnet might play a part in this - my bakkie is like a brick through the air and seems to avoid stone chips by comparison!

well i have gotten some stone chips and its a bit noticable with my colour but recently i see also my clear coat got damaged and is peeling on the lower front end of the bumper.

must i get the bumper re-sprayed fully or just the clear coat?

Hi Bud,

I have had a similar issue - If your car has not been repaired by a "non BMW " repair shop - it will mean that your car is still under the lifetime paint warranty offered by BMW. Take your car into a BMW dealership - tell them you are not happy with the paintwork and that the clear is peeling away - you should get the bumper resprayed and repaired for no cost.

Well it worked for me.

Regards,
Sugen.

Unfortunately you cannot just spray clearcoat onto existing paint. :nonono:

You would either need to get someone like Leonard to do a "spot repair" using a bonding agent but ideally the entire bumper should be sprayed.

We recently had a case with a spot repair on a Z4M which I detailed about 6 months ago where the job had to be repeated as the wax on the paint (Put on 6 months ago) made the bonding agent bead upsetting the join between the old paint and new repair. :yuck:

Now my repair team knows that Collonite Wax is a stubborn fook to remove!

So either a spot repair or sand-down and whole bumper respray.

Thanks alot bud!

i am just saving up and going to send my car to LZ for a nice, holiday for him to touch-up and sort out all chips and scratches on the car. will do it out my pocket though, hence the saving up process lol

thanks again Mike!

i was wondering if it will fall under the lifetime warranty claim as the car has never been to a panelshop before. will follow up on that, will check who is best to go to and see from there.

Even the silver inserts on the interior of car (centre console and on door) have little dents in them. I see the F30 solved this problem my making the door panels all leather.

What is the best colour to get then? White? Then you end up seeing all those stubbord tar marks.

Most of what I do is stone chips.

Did a sand blasted restore on a Navara once, complete front end, guy was pissed... He was stuck behind a truck on a mountian pass, and did not realize the damage it was doing.

Got my bumper done...

Only when it was done and fitted did we realize how bad the bonnet actually is. Will send it in at another time though.

One of the main reasons the newer cars, and this is not limited to BMW suffer from stone chips whereas the older cars dont is down to the paint itself.

A lot of car pre-2000 were painted with Acrylic Paint, whereas the newer cars are painted with waterbased paint which naturally is a softer paint.

Along with the clearcoat on the newer cars being much softer you end up with this result.

Its normal and it happens.

Why go backwards in terms of paint quality?

Hi there..I am reading about the car chips repair. Can anyone advise on a white BMW 2006 model of a place I can go to to fix a few chips on the bonnet of my car? Got a quote form BMW for R3021 for repair and spray of bonnet, and a chip on the bottom part of the sports front bumper. That is too much for me to pay.

I gather you are in CPT...

I had my front bumper repaired and resprayed at a place in Okavango Park called Brighton Body and Spray (021) 981 6022, speak to Mike Jnr. They did a very good job and for the work done for my car was just under R2400, but bear in mind that I took the bumper to them and refitted myself, so cut out labour costs for that.

But in terms of matching the paint and finish, very impressed! Was recommended to them by MiniMike, so can say that you were referred by Mike and myself.

Either give Ina or Mike Jnr a call at Brighton or let me grab you a quote from Dent Magic Tygervalley, they give me discounted prices as I know the owner personally.

They have done a lot of work for the fanatics, in fact this week alone I have a Volvo C30, BMW E46 M3 and Nissan GTR booked there for spraywork.

Dent Magic wont spray the entire bonnet but rather 30cm in, blend and join the clears with a bonding agent, the finish is excellent!

Give me a ring on 083 three double 7 0500 if you want me to grab you a quote.
