Stolen Spare key

Hi guys

On monday just after closing time at work, I went out the back door to my car, unlocked my car, put some boxes in the boot, went back into the shop to get some more boxes, activate the shop's alarm.
Took about 1 or 2 minutes, when I got back to my car I saw that every compartment that can open was open, my micro fibre cloth laying on the seat, and my owners manuel was laying on the floor.
At that time I couldn't think of anything that was missing.............

Until now I realise I put my spare key inside the car, it was at work and wanted to take it home.

So somebody in town has got my spare key now, and I'm quite worried about that.

Called my insurance just now, they will pay for new keys and coding, but my access is R2500.

Does anybody perhaps know what such a exercise can cost?
As I suppose I must get two new keys now, and get it recoded so that the spare cannot work on my car again?

And can this only be done at the agents?

Surely you will only need 1 new key as your existing key can be recoded and the stolen key can be deregistered :fencelook:

Wow, this is a bit of a blunder! Locks will have to be changed too. The existing key should be able to have it recoded, but the physical key part will have to be replaced and re-cut for the new locks.

If all of this is going to be done, then R2500 excess is probably quite fair.

Hi there guys.
Can he buy a spare key from a scrapyard and had it coded as to the one he got.

Send from a GALAXY....far far away!!!!

Get two new keys because your current one will eventually need replacing.

Don't change the locks. Just have the coding changed so the old keys no longer work. Yes the physical key can still open the locks manually but it will set off the alarm and the car won't start.

Two new keys plus coding = R3600 when I had mine done. Independent lock smith. Can't remember the name.

Just get a quote from BMW and submit that to insurance for pay out. The quote will be a lot higher and so your excess will be "covered".
