Steering noise?

Any ideas? Only at low speeds and it seems that as I rev higher the nose is less bad...

Some guessing from my side. The E39 and E46 have notoriously bad hose clamps and the power steering fluid leaks out, don't know about the E90. Check the level. The cap on the bottle has a built-in dipstick. If it is low the pump sucks air and makes weird noises. Happens mostly when you go round a corner. It is easy to fix - buy a bottle of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) at the nearest garage and pour it in. Hope this is the case, or else the bearings on the pump may be on the way out. Or worse.

I was very lucky, my E46 did a sort of "self service" on the power steering, the top hose popped off about 1km from home leaking all the ATF fluid out, after refitting the hose and refilling with ATF it is a lot quiter than before, so in my case the system needed fresh ATF. I know all my fellow mechanics will agree with me, once the ATF in your power steering starts to smell like burnt toast it is time to drain the old fluid and put fresh fluid in.

Power steering systems are the cheapest items to service, the most neglected, and one of the most expensive to repair once it is "beyond routine service " due to neglect.

low power steering fluid, first point of call....and soon to prevent the internal damage to the pump due to cavitation and running dry

Fluid level is at max... And I don't think it smells burnt - not to me, at least
