Starting problem on cold days

hi

i am new to the fourm, and this is my first BMW. Its a 1989 316i, 4 door. i seem to have this weird problem, if i start the car on a cold day, it will start the first time and if i switch it off after a few minutes(before it gets hot) and then try starting it again, it will just swing. After about 20 mintutes, it will start again. i have no problems on hot days, starts and drives well. I have serviced the car, replaced the battery and was told from the previous owner the fuel pump was replaced in the last year.
i have noticed that when i fill 93, the problem is abit better compared to LRP.

the car has over 300 000km.

I also replaced the plastic induction pipe as it had a tear on it.

Any ideas what could be at fault? Someone told me it could be an engine relay?

thanks

have you checked the common stuff like distributor/coil/faulty plugs?
PS I'm not really sure of the 316i motor setup, we had that prob with or 325i though.
