Speaker upgrade

Hey guys,

I was wondering if I can get some suggestions as to what type and size of speakers would be a nice upgrade to the current stock ones. I don't want to heavily cut/modify anything really, just looking for a nice upgrade :)

im assuming you just wanna change the speakers on the doors, but just doing that wont change much, you are gonna need an amp, 4 channel (if you wanna change door speakers), this allows you to put a woofer too, which i feel is a must with car sound upgrades.

i always thought the beamer speakers were ok, so i just put a woofer and amp, really makes the sound pop. minimally invasive too.

OK... I am looking at those discreet subs maybe... Do you know if the stock radio has the two RCA outputs that goes to the amp?

+1

But with some of the stock sound just adding a sub isnt always just that. Id say do a full new speakers and add sub and amp.

Stock speakers in the e46 are some of the worst speakers you can get. Like they said changing the speakers in the door won't change much.

Amp and sub needed for decent sound but its all going to be useless unless you cut a hole through the ski-hatch to get the bass sound into the cabin of the car.

The e46 standard sound is pathetic to say the least. The speakers are cheap sounding dual paper cone units powered by an average quailty 20x4 amplifier in the head unit, add to this that the front door spekers are mounted directly on the door pad, and not in the door itself, and you sort of get the idea why it sounds so crap.

As an audiophile, I knew what i was getting into when i purchased the car, its just that I never really gave thought to what a headache it would be to upgrade the sound system. The head unit is basic, with no MP3 (unless you have an '05 model), no RCA outputs, no USB, etc, so already its suitability as the basis for a good sound setup is diminished. If you are willing to install an aftermarket head unit with faceplate, then you will be better off, but then it sticks out like a sore thumb on your console. Then theres the issue of running cables, opening panels, mounting amps, etc, which in a solidly put together car like the e46, is a mission.

Its not impossible to install a good sound system in an e46, just that if you DIY, then be prepared to put in alot of work, or if you going to use a fitment centre, then be prepared to shell out. I have replaced the speakers and tweeters in my car with good quality Pioneer units after a standard rear speaker popped. To be honest the increase in overall sound quality has been minimal, same crappy bass response, although it is much better in the clarity department and at high volumes it doesnt sound strained.

I have decided to leave it be, and just ensure that the next BMW i buy has a factory upgraded sound system.

I curse BMW for the standard sound system in the e46, especially when you compare it to the Mercs and Audi's of the same period....

sup Werner,

the E46 uses 6" mids.

in january i changed the mids in the rear of my E46; put Sony xplod 190W running of a 500X4 linertec amp. also put a Rockford Fosgate SVC of the same amp.

truth be told... it sounds average. nothing great. the clarity is a lot better than stock. there is bass (better than nothing) but most of it is trapped in the boot.

if you are willing to modify the backboard; consider putting limpids

you dont really need a amp uh....if you have a new-ish good deck, they have crossover built in , its not as good as the one on the amp but its pretty good. I was gna put a 4ch amp but after i put the new deck didn realy need it unless you going for big sound. Just get a monoblk, sub ,deck and some new speakes

Thanks guys for all the feedback, just want to know, if I install my own amp, I probably have to run my own cables right? Don't suppose I can use the cables that are there already? I'm not planning to go big, just want a bit better sound. Otherwise I'll just upgrade the speakers...

I have a 10inch sub and an amp powering both the sub all the standard speakers with the factory headunit. The skihatch has been knocked through I get a sufficient amount of bass (much more than stock). The system has a good amount of power in terms of loudness, but the clarity is perhaps a little lacking. It depends on where you standards lie.

Adding a sub and amp to the standard system is definitely a significant upgrade, though its not perfect.
