Spare Wheel Kit - Advise

Good day fellow Fanatics

Could someone advise on whether it is a good idea to get a spare wheel kit for an F30 320i BMW that is coming out of Motor Plan?

I am not sure on the cost of calling out BMW on-call out of motor plan for a puncture, or if they even offer the service out of MP.

And I have never had the reason to use the compressor repair kit with the canister, so am not sure how reliable that is.

If it is worth purchasing the spare wheel kit, can someone advise where to get this at a reasonable price? The stealership quoted me R6500 and +/-R1200 for the replacement canister for the compressor kit.

Hi Mitesh,

I bought my space saver steel spare wheel from "PiaarP" on Gumtree last year.
It is an E90 wheel that fits F30s (but, won't fit if you have the optional M-Performance brakes - in which case, you will need to ask him for a larger spec wheel).

PiaarP has had a few bad reviews from a few guys on the forum.
However, my experience was positive.
I found him to be quick and professional.
It cost R3,500 (in 2018) for a steel space saver wheel + jack + spanner + black leather/vinyl wheel cover.
Wheel specs: 135/80 R17 102M
Rubber still in great condition and still holds air well.

For added piece of mind I asked both TWT and BMW JSN to check the wheel and they gave it the thumbs up (no Fong Kong knock-off product).

I mounted my spare with cargo straps in the boot (it lies flat).
Boot space is reduced, but if you pack soft luggage bags, you will be fine.
Packing a pram/stroller is more difficult, however.

I will try him. R3500 sounds reasonable.

You will be charged for a call out if you car is out of plan. Good cheap option will be to put non runflats and get a space saver.

The problem with PiaarP is when you are not happy, once he has your money, its gone. Did he allow you to take it for testing prior to payment?

Anyone used those cans of sealant ? There’s is no better option than a spare although I find keeping a plug kit and compressor works well

I always though keeping runflats is a good option, in case you get a puncture in a quiet or dangerous area, at least you can still carry on driving to a safe place to change the tyre. I agree with getting a space saver spare wheel.

Thanks. I suppose having a plug kit works well if you competent on being able to use one...

In all of my cars even the ones which had a spare wheel I always kept a can of tyre fix, its a life saver, saves you time and much safer than changing a spare wheel on the side of the road in a dodgy part of town. once you get back you can sort the puncture out.

I would recommend keeping the 4x4 can of tyre fix rather, the can is slightly bigger that way you still have some left in the can in case the tyre deflates again you can just re-inflate with the remainder...

also people tend to think it is a permanent fix which is wrong the tyre still needs to be checked once you get to your destination.

Once my runflats on my car need replacing I will be putting non runflats, getting a spare wheel kit and definitely will be keeping a can of tyre fix.

If I may ask, what is the pro of changing to non-run flats?

From what I know, Firstly they are much cheaper than runflats and Secondly Non runflats improve your ride quality.

With the E90, the ride quality with the runflats was atrocious at best. It was a night and day difference when I changed from 18" runflat to 19" normal on my previous E90 with M sport suspension.

However, with the F30, I recently had a loan set of normal 18s when my 19s were sent in. Whilst there was a noticeable difference on very rough roads, the suspension on the F30 (even with M sport) is actually decent with the 19" runflats. It is nowhere near as harsh as the E90.

The only reason I would still have a spare is for that extra margin of safety. If you damage a tyre wall, a runflat is worthless. Also, runflat prices have come down drastically, where there is not a huge difference in most of the decent brands. When I was shopping for tyre prices, 19" Bridgestones in runflats were about R200-R400 more than the normal version. For that difference, I would rather go with the runflats. At double the price, it is a different argument.

However, you do get really cheap non-runflats in the less common brands, but most of which I would not put on my car.

So, seems the benefit on the F30 with runflats makes more sense to stay on runflats, and still get a spare wheel for a more safer journey. The runflat will at least get one to a safe spot to change the tyre if need be.

Another question regarding the compressor repair kit. Is there any generic compressor cans that can be used with the BMW kit? The dealers quoted over R1000 for a replacement canister, and I see on takealot one can buy an entire kit for far less. (Not sure how this once compares to the BMW one).
