Ahem, bought my car at auction. Don't no if I should admit that here.....:mmm:

E46 325i

Problem is, I was only given one key.:cursin:

Can I get a spare key from anywhere other than the Stealers?

Be much obliged. Worried about what happens if that one key expires......

Hey I bought my last car at an auction. For very cheap. Nothing to be ashamed of there!

If you had an E90 and 1 key, you would have a problem.

I have read on international forums that you can buy used E46 keys on ebay/gumtree and so on and then theres an intricate coding procedure to be followed. So dont despair.

Search the forums here, there must be something on it. If that fails google it!

Try Ebay as well, or the junk yards.

I have even heard of guys getting one from a dealership that was just lying around. the guy opened it up with a stanley blade. And put the little board (innards) into it. Sealed it up with plastic epoxy. Good as new.

e46 keys (like any ews keys) have a transponder inside that is unique to the car.. NO WAYS a second hand key can be made to START the car.. a second hand key can be made to OPEN the car though..

to get a second key that can open AND start the car you need a key with a blank transponder and someone with the tools to program it (the transponder inside the key is programmed with the rolling code wirelessly) BMW dealers send your vin to the factory and the factory sends back a key programed with the code in their database.

some locksmiths have the equipment to do this too, they read the code directly off your ews module and then program a key.
