My Dad has a 525i Touring Spy. It is a full import, usually from the UK, and there are about 6 or 8 of them in Cape Town.
Our one is a 5speed Manual, and the Blue one seems to be the 4speed Auto.
We have been stopped many times by prospective buyers, and my dad is not really keen to sell. One of these buyers informed us that his brother had owned such a Touring, which he imported himself, and that they were released overseas with a slightly larger displacement of 2.7litres to compensate for the climate in the UK.
Allie Gamiet of ART Automotive in Athlone confirms that they have a higher output of "Around 20Kw more than standard" as a result, but I cannot find any proof of this anywhere.
I can say, however, that our car pulls far better than an equivalent 325i e36, of which my father has had two... I would even go as far to say that it is about on par with a e46 330i, as initially we thought it to be a 535i.
The sound is MAGNIFICENT to say the least, but our car is in need of a good service now, as we are picking up a slight flat spot at around 2500rpm under acceleration, and it is beginning to "hunt" for revs when being driven on cold days.
My dad would not part with his Touring for anything less than 45K, and even that would be at a push. I can understand why though, its an absolute joy to drive, and cruising at the National limit is effortless.
If it were my money, I would buy the Blue example, and fix it us as a family vehicle. As long as the mechanicals are good, it still makes an incredible buy.
In short, if you really want it, and its mechanically good, BUY IT!
