My 2001 e53 X5 3.0d +- 250 000km

some feedback on my findings having owned the car for about 2 yrs now, previous owner did not look after the car so I had to resort to a lot of fixes and repairs.

some of these might help you in repairing yours and some issues are related to other models. so here goes

in order of repairs done.

1. the car had a bad shaking on steering on about 60km/p and 120km/ph - did balancing replaced tires, replaced tie rod ends, lower and upper control arm bushings and ball joints in front - problem still persisted but better.
then replaced frond brake disks, replaced front tires again -- still had shaking and vibration on 120km/ph on steering.
took the car for rod forge balancing and found no shaking on the wheels but however on car balancing there was shaking
turned out the front rims needed 2.5 mm spigot rings fitted as the front and back hubs are a different size.

2. intermittent staring issues, the car would run fine for 3 weeks and then all the sudden stopping some ware would not start again, checked fuel pump, fuses fuel pump relay on top of the fuse box but all is was ok. changed the cram position sensor and the problem was gone!

3. car started overheating, steering became heavy also had this shaking motion standing at a traffic light, found the damper pulley ring broke loose from the rubber and turning freely not turning the water and steering pump at correct speeds.

4. replaced ABS sensors on 2 wheels as i had the steering angle light, ABS and DBC lights on on the dash. at first i thought it was the steering angle sensor.

5. Pierburg in tank and in line fuel pumps replaced with Bosch pumps as i was getting hesitation on higher rev ranges.

6. reconditioned turbo as it was leaking oil from the turbo plate as well as a diesel smell in the cabin, also wooshing sounds, same time replaced the crank case vent filter for the oil in the turbo, it was completely blocked up.

7. replaced a blown water tank.

8. repaired leaking inter cooler, causing the turbo only to boost later in rev range and erratic gear changing to boost up.

9. replaced the control arm bushes with Polly urethane ones cause the ones i bought from Goldwagen only lasted a year

the rest has been normal serviceable parts and happy with the car and performance. i must stress however finding some of the issues has a nightmare and almost ended up selling the car.

now happy I didn't!

maybe this will help someone with similar problems.
