Drove past this very original 1982 518 at dealership in Vereeniging- not sure if this vehicle is known to the forum:
R34900
Apparently acquired from deceased estate
136 000km
Looks like original paint (?) touched up, not resprayed (Don't quote me on this)
Dash in PERFECT condition with Blaupunkt Heidelberg Stereo
Seats just redone in blue vinyl
Door cards looks good
Is a runner, needs shocks according to dealer
Needs some TLC
Original owners handbook but no tools

if this was an e12/8 fuel injected 518i it would have been in my garage yesterday. This still mint! but the 518i was unique to SA, want one so bad.

The 518 2 litre! Our first BMW way back in the '80s - we had a reseda green executive model!

I see that this model has a single carburettor, probably a solex. Is that original?

I remember these cars having the twin Strommberg carbs. Anyway, this single carb model must be much lighter on fuel as many owners did this conversation back then for economy.

Beautiful piece! I would love to get the E12/8 version 518i or even the 528i - the E28 refinements are unique to SA and truly gave the E12 a magical touch.

True, the 518 2.0lt was fitted with 2 strombergs, most owners converted to either weber or solex, The strombergs were shit to say the least, wearing needles and seats, diaphragms,. They also were fitted with 4 spd boxes, although most owners converted to 5spds. They were built for the fuel crisis, (what was BMW thinking) The cars were shit heavy on fuel, the 4spd made travelling over 100km a pain, I know I owned one!!

The car seems in fair condition, although comparing the engine bay with interior and exterior seems like 2 different owners. I am sceptic of the 137km on the clock because of the engine bay, but i could be wrong. The previous owner could have kept it mint and its easy for a new owner to destroy the mint condition in the space of a few months (ask me I know)

They not desirable or imho worth 34k!! But then again hard to find solid basis to build a nice classic runner for weekend fun. Seats seems to have been done nicely and good dashboards are rare.. very rare. This car seems to be a 79-80- 81 model, due to the small additions of the vents on the air intakes on the dash and the brake booster style. The older cars had the booster on the carb side. The plastic exterior mirrors also prove that. This is a pre facelift version and not a SA special known as a e12/8. A E12 body with E28 dash and interior which started around 84.

Spares still available, tools not too much of a problem to source. Rust is a issue if any, EARLY E12 were very prone to rust.

For someone who wants a easily maintainable classic era car from the BMW stable its perfect starter, lots of TLC and she could be a stunner, although never be worth money.
