Hi, where can I find a solid, single mass flywheel for my M30B35? 240mm

I'm looking at the scrapyards around here (Cape Town), but no luck so far.

It can come from any M30 motor found in the 5, 6 or 7 series. e.g.: E28/E12 528, 530, 535, 533, E24 635, E23 728, 733 or 735i.

I'm having a bad time trying to find one. I've got the clutch for the single mass flywheel and can get a CV joint for the prop shaft. So the only other part I need to refurbish my whole drivetrain, is this flywheel!!!!
Is yours a dual mass as well?

Hi Paul Casson up in JHB says he may be able too help you. Single mass fly wheels are very scarce as most of the cars were autos. BMW says its also no longer available.

They just done a conversion on a E34 from dual mass too single and he also was at pains to find a new one , he has good second hand ones.

Give him a call and discuss the sizes and if it has the magnetic pick up.

Call after 11am 082 576 four zero nine zero

Good Luck

I just spoke to Paul, he might be able to help if i can determine if it has a magnetic pickup (which i doubt).

I will 100% confirm this and the part number of my clutch and speak to him again tomorrow.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

if its a 86 or higher 535i.. i think motronic 1.4, then it will have magnetic pickup.

No It's a Motronic 1.3. No magnetic pickup on flywheel. Only on crank pulley.

Thanks. I will surely give him a call.

I am really considering a racing or custom flywheel. It's proving difficult to almost impossible to find a bloody flywheel for this car that won't break the bank! :cursin:

Here are some pictures of the new flywheel i put in and then also one of the weight of the old dual mass.
The difference in responsiveness and drive ability is noticeable and it the best decision I've made so far on this car.

New flywheel: 6kg.

Old flywheel:

15kg.

Nice upgrade Ricky
I have been thinking about doing this as well but going to be a while after the body work.
Whats next for the 535?

Actually a lot, if i had all the money i needed :bawling:

  • New shocks (where can i find them? I've looked at all the spares places!!!)
  • New timing chain and tensioner
  • Thermostat housing
  • Rear suspension - suframe bushes
  • shock mounts rear
  • trailing arm bushes to tighten up the 5's ass

How's your maintenance list looking?

Same here man, cost of parts is the only thing holding me back.
I got my front Bilstein shocks through Incomex.
Still need to do the back.
They do Meyle Parts as well.
Your list isn't too bad, definitely doable.
I have an excel document for my list that has quite a few items.
Next though after the body work i need to find an intake leak and then sort out the noise from the center bearing, i think Zeemax installed it incorrectly a few years ago.
I no longer use Zeemax but i used to when i first got the car
I also have to do my rear suspension bushings.

We will get there though, help each other out and we can make it an easier process.

Good mechanic i found is in Montague Gardens if you ever looking for one.
His name is Mike Bridge 083 7771 964, only person that will work on my car.
Brilliant with mechanical and electrical and doesn't rip you off by replacing parts that don't need to be replaced.
I do what i can on my own but if i can't do it, i send it to Mike

Thanks for the advice.
I will let you know where i get my parts when i start stocking them up next week.
My brother usually works on my car and so far he has done an excellent job! If he messes up, I will tell Dad. :)

I also had a big centre support bearing problem: I broke my universal joint, then buggered up the bearing and balancing of prop shaft was out. Had to have prop balanced, universal replaced as well as centre support bearing. Oh yes, the drive shaft CV also had to be refurbished!

My release bearing is making a noise so i bought a new one and will be replacing it soon.

Good luck with your bushes. Let me know where you buy your parts.
