Software and chipping

Howsit guys.

I'm a little unsure about how this works and would like to get some knowledge about it.

Can someone explain to me the following:
How does chipping work?
What type of chips do you get?
If you send your car in for service, can they detect that your have modified the computer box?
What is a remap?
Advantages of having software installed in your car?

Sorry for asking so many questions.

I will let the tuners answer it but software remap i reckon is the best way to go, chipping is what people normally say but it's a software flash on your ECU... but there are chips you can put on your car but my limited knowledge it's best for the tuners to explain JB and all those..

It's a BMW 320D (E46 05 Model).

It's out of motorplan, mileage is at 188k.

Not to sure on the budget part, not sure what it costs. Once I have an idea then I'll know what to put on the table.

Ok software remap is around 5-6k... if i remember correctly. we have a few tuners on here and they will help you out soon

But, this question has always bugged me- why dnt the manufacturers just do it straight out the blocks?
Is there a reliabilty issue?

I was once told that manufacturers tune for reliabilty and manufacturers tune for performance...Is this true?

There are many reasons WHY manufacturers don't do it from day one...

1.) cars are made for world wide use in various conditions; it would cost them too much to especially program an ECU for each country.
When I say too much then you need to understand that manufacturers even look to save R5 per car just to get a better balanance on cost vs profit!

2.) Emission control is another major part that plays a role!
Development is one for European counties with much stricter emission control. Better performance does automatically mean higher emissions.... there is no way around it!

3.) In some counties marketing a certain model in a certain niche is very important to maximise sales.
This is done via insurance brackets / classes i.e. in the UK or Germany where more horspower means heavier premiums!
So the car is artificially limited into a lower class in oerder to make the premiums more affordable for younger people

There are a few more (minor) reasons but I trust the above expains it well enough!

Of course less stress (power) means longer life for parts and engine; no doubt about that!
However, BMW parts are so well engineered that this is is one of the minor points I mentioned above!

Never really looked at it like that. I always had my doubts about chipping, tuning and the likes. But what you say makes alot of sense.:thumbs:

dont even consider "chipping" ie. unichip, piggyback, tuning box ect. on a turbo diesel.
remap is the only way to go. there are plenty advertisers with good reputations offering remapping services on this forum..
