So... I bought an M5

4 steps forward, 3 steps back: 4 new discs and pads installed -- and I can feel the difference! -- yet 3 rims were scratched in the process, 1 of them all the way down to bare metal. Rims will be fixed by the responsible party, but I have to wonder: why are they not more careful with other people's property? Also got the proper BMW wheel bolts on now, as well as a BMW lock-nut set. I had to go back to get 3 wheel bolts swapped, which they neglected to swap the first time? That's after I gave them everything they need this morning! *sigh*

How is the oil working for you? Did you ever solve that OBD port issue?

Oil is fine, I think; only used a bit for top-up so far. The OBD port is still on my list of things to do.

At last I found a slightly used micro-filter box for the driver's side. Nope, mine didn't come with one:

Passenger side one, which was also removed for some quick cleaning:

I assume that's the computer box underneath:

Driver side micro-filter box installed:

Yes, I'm still missing the air channel. And yes, I did remember the little clamp around the nut after I took the photo. And yes, it appears to be terribly dirty in there. We're getting there...

Had to duck out of the way of a Mini coming from the front in the narrow roads in Claremont and it seems the 5 is just a little bit wider than the 3: :bawling:

Yeah. I was just there on Friday to get a quote on the 3 wheels that were scratched by SMG. Now it's 4 wheels. :(

Discovered a dead battery when I tried to start the car this morning. Voltage was fluctuating between 10.8V and 11.1V, which I believe is not quite enough. It's been sitting on the charger for most of today and we're up to 12.4V now, which is closer to where it's supposed to be. Will test it in a little bit, since I need to fuel up for the run tomorrow morning. Whilst I had everything open at the back, I noticed lots of missing clips and such like, as well as missing nuts on the trunk left and right side members. Can't seem to find these nuts on realoem or bmwfans.info. Any idea anyone? Also discovered a tiny bit of rust and lots of dirt behind the side panels. I then turned my attention back to the battery which seems to be sitting very loose in the box. Turns out that this battery is not the right one. It bears a BMW part number of 61217548356, which I can't find on the internet. According to the label it's 80Ah 140RC 640CCA, and according to bmwfanatics: E39 M5 battery? it should be closer to 110Ah 205RC 850CCA. Eish!

[Edit]One plus though: found the missing clip for the intake silencer (air filter). No idea how it ended up in the boot!

Thanks Mike. :)

Tonight's mission completed: driver seat controls working again; had to remove the previous MacGyver (electrical tape) and replace it with a better MacGyver (cable ties). Also managed to get the side covering (item 6) to fit better and hopefully it will now stay attached until I can find a replacement covering. Eish, my parts list is just getting longer...

Always have to move forward...

Tool kit complete:

Yes, a tow bar on an M5. OEM too. Most of it was there already, apart from the cover for the electrical connection as well as the removable tow hitch and dust plug:

And before you comment about having a tow bar on an M5: it'll only be there when used. The rest of the time nobody will know about that feature. Also, this is the only vehicle I have that's capable of towing, since there's no way I'm cutting into my E36 individual bumper.

Hi chaps.
Anyone know how to solve the conversion of plug from 13 pin (Euro) thats on the trailer coupling and the 7 pin on most (if not all) trailers.

I hear BMW sells an adaptor, but its R600.
anyone have a cheaper alternative where PDC etc all work as thy should (basically disengaged wen reversing)?

On the E39 M5, that adapter doesn't work, since the bumper is in the way, ie. you can't get the adapter in there to do the work without removing a bit of the bumper. So yes, also looking for an alternative. And yes, I have the BMW part.
