Congrats, after the brakes I recommend to start with the restoration of the headlight glass it makes a huge difference just compared yours to Jeff’s on the pics he posted.

I visited Mike @ Definitive Detailing today and he also suggested doing the headlights. Will speak to him once I sorted the more technical stuff.

In an attempt to locate a vibration, I had the suspension checked out yesterday and the wheels balanced today. Turns out the rims are bad and need to be straightened. The one rim couldn't be balanced at all, which probably explains the vibration. Does anybody have contact details for The Wheel Shop in CT, or are they only in JHB? Or are there any other good options in CT?

Congrats pi328. Well, now I guess we will all have to get together and compare our cars, and try help each other sort our various niggles. There is a fourth very quiet Forum member who is also in Cape Town with an E39 M5. We should really arrange a meet, all four cars together. Just need to find the time. :thumbs:

The model car was a gift one birthday, a few years ago. Was probably bought at the stealers. Funny how it worked out that I got the real thing in the same colour.

Absolutely brilliant! Pity we couldnt do any diagnosing on the car - It does seem like the OBD port is not getting power.

Did you check to see if there was a fuse for it that may have been blown?

Will check fuses and such when I get the car back. Had to leave it at The Mag Workshop since they didn't have loan wheels that fitted the car. :bawling: Apparently the wheel hubs are 74 which means the car was built & imported from the US? :thinking: That probably also means no Grabouw run for me this weekend. Takes a while to get the wheels straightened and refurbished, but hopefully that will help in getting the bad vibrations sorted.

Ag, it's okay. I've made peace with it. Just enquired at SMG Cape what a set of wheel bolts cost. Only R48.38. Per wheel bolt! Yes, discount included. Guess how many I want? 16! Want to replace all the wheel bolts that came with the car, since it's a mix-match between original and VW and Mercedes bolts. And then the next shocker: the lock nut bolt set is about R900 after discount. Luckily the plastic covering caps are quite cheap at about R10 each. Bloody hell. :bawling:

Wow, I am shocked by the state of the wheels, they were balanced at the time that I put new tires on it, I know of that one pavement incident thanks to the wifey, but did not know it was buckled so badly......

But glad you found the problem, and that it is not prop.

Mike I can assure you that the OBD port on the car works perfectly, perhaps its the software, what are you diagnosing with, but DIS,ISIS and INPA works well on the car.

Left front rim has a visible buckle on the outside, with nick on the tyre wall, so I guess that's the incident with the pavement? Back right is the one that can't be balanced. I was standing there whilst TWT tried to balance them and could easily see the buckle. So the straightening and refurbish is required right now, in my attempt to locate and eradicate the vibration. It's become quite bad under braking, but that might be related to disks or pads as well. The rims needed to be done regardless.

The OBD port isn't powering the devices that Mike and Jeff tried. Will check when I get the car back. Might be as simple as a blown fuse or something.

Oh yes, remember those rubber strips we couldn't place? They go on the frame where the bonnet rests on the sides. Ho hum.
