Snap-i Adapters

Hi guys, so I want to get a snap in adapter for my car, but I am lost as to what it should be. I have done some reading up on ze net and I am not sure if I have a 6NR interface or a 6NF interface. I have an AUX port under my arm rest but no USB port. If I read around, it would seem as though I have a 6NF interface (I have a blanking plate where the snap-in would be) because I only have the AUX port and no USB, which means I would have to get a standard music snap-in and not a media snap-in (which gives WAY more functionality than just the music snap-in).

I have been given a price of R2000 from BMW for a music snap-in (I think) which isn't too bad and will let me use my iDrive and steering wheel controls to select music and all that. Does anyone have any idea what I have? Apparently 6NR is on POST September 2010 and 6NF PRE September 2010. I've got an iPhone 4 (not 4S), so I just need some clarity. Is there anyone else with this snap-in?

I'm not 100% sure but I think post 2010 cars came with the combox instead of the 6series adapters .

BMW does offer the iPod/iphone retrofit kit, but the price is closer to R5k

Ouch, ok, that's a bit steep. Just got off the phone with BMW now and they are saying for my specification based on my VIN, I need the basic snap-in,which is a glorified phone holder that costs R1000. So I guess I may be out of luck dommit.

I won't give up easily though! Thanks for the feedback! I probably need to find someone who's got a music or media snap-in and try it that way to see if it works.

May i ask if this snap in is simply to use the phone and charge it etc via bluetooth?
if so, surely you should also be able to play yout music through it via aux?

This is the same snap in adaptor i want for my X6 aswell

Scouse, I am looking for the snap-in adapter that shows album art on the iDrive screen but also lets you control the iPod functionality from your iDrive. There are three types of snap-ins apparently, a basic one, which is just basically a cradle for your phone and charges it whilst in the car, a media snap-in, which gives you the functionality mentioned above as well as some extra with BMW Apps, and then a music snap-in,which just gives you control of the iPod through your iDrive and steering wheel controls.

The problem, according to BMW,is that I only have the base plate in my car and not the 6NF adapter I thought. If you to www.bmw.co.za and select the lifestyle and accessories, you can do a search on there for the snap-in you need. So I am now hectically confused. I have Bluetooth in my car, which apparently is a pre-requisite for the media snap-in,but the guy from the parts department insists I can only use the basic snap-in,which is pointless, cos you are then paying R1000 for fancy charger. He gave me that information based on my VIN number on their system.

You need more than just the cradle to be able to use the media snap in adapter. The car needed to be specced with 6NR/6FR (forget which one) option when it was built. There is no retrofit available. Luckily both my M3's were fitted with that option.

And the other poster was correct. The post facelift M3's could be ordered with the combox option

Hmmm, that's bad news if there is no retrofit available. Maybe there is a non-OEM one available, like from Rivonia Car Sound or something like that? I know it's petty, but every time I want to change the music on the iPhone I have to take my eyes off the road and fiddle and faff instead of being able to do it remotely. I guess my only other option is some sort of remote control for the iPhone. Thanks for the info M3_FTW.

BMW don't offer the combox retrofit. However, there are Guys overseas that offer it. Do you have the hard drive based iDrive ?

I don't think so,actually not sure how to tell to be honest :fencelook:

It's not a major train smash,it's a nice to have rather than a must have, it's a small irritation more than anything.

Easiest way to tell is do you have one or two DVD slots in the centre console.

Phone Julian at Tremor Audio. He should be able to help you out

Aaah,I only have the one DVD slot, for the navigation DVD and then the standard front loading CD player above that. Thanks,I will definitely look him up.

Then you have the previous generation iDrive. The newer ones 2010 upwards are hard drive based. In essence a combox retrofit will work out more expensive for you then.

Like I said. Call Julian. He has done iDrive integration before and it was relatively cheap. 2k or so

Brilliant,if he is capable of doing it then I will give him a shout. See he is in Midrand which isn't too far,so may just pop out there. And R2k isn't too bad considering.

If the car has bluetooth connectivity then you might be able to stream the music files on the Iphone over bluetooth to the audio system.

I know I can do this with the Audi I drive, might save you some cash and time, if you can find out if the car can do this, over bluetooth?

Not unless combox or the older 6NR option was taken
