Burgy, yes you must have it checked out. First see if there are no obvious leaks of petrol under the car....stop and rev the car to check for any spurting leaks... Also check the fuel cap it maybe worn out...
Fuel smells in cabin can also be dangerous for passengers and drivers in the long term...like being on a constant high and you dont know the reason...
also, this happened in my e36, not sure if the e46 fuel pump is in the same place. under the back seats is the access to the fuel pumps. one of the petrol lines disconnected somehow.
