slight erratic idle

Hi Guys

This morning I started up my car (2006 E90 323i) and let it idle for about a 2mins or so all normal. I get in, put in the clutch and take reverse, the revs climb up a little as normal but when the rev goes down, it goes down just below normal idle rev, but the car then picks up the rev. This is with the clutch in. With the car in neutral there’s no issue. After driving a while the car is fine. The oil level is a little low but still fine.

Was it just the car being cold? It is getting colder in Josie or is it time to change the clutch?

Thanks guys

Not sure about the erratic idle - I think some these (not sure though) I6's have a varying idle ranges depending on temperature and other conditions. If it gets worse or more often then let the agents take a look.

Just a tip for what it's worth - not the best thing to do by letting a cold engine idle. Rather start the car and drive off as soon as you can (obviously allow the engine to get chance to get fluids moving), but drive off gently with light throttle inputs etc. The idea is to allow the engine to warm up as quickly as possible without revving or lugging - most wear on an engine is generated when an engine is cold. And then there is also the richer fuel/air mixture which is compromising the effectiveness of the oil trying to protect the engine - not to mention slightly higher fuel usage.

What sort of oil consumption are you getting with the 323i? My 330i seems to be going through a litre of oil in 6000 - 7000 km from what I can see. (It's on half now and was topped up a little over 3000 km ago...)

Thanks for the advise Philip Foglar.

The car was fine today no issues. But i'm doing a diagnostic tomorrow morning anyway.

My oil consumption is about the same as yours. Doing an oil change this weekend as well.
