There is no loss of power, and most threads I have read, the owners just learn to live with the noise. Its not going to blow the engine, its just irritating.

Both SAV and TuneTech say this is a very common problem in e46 M3's. They see it all the time. Some people don't mind the noise, but for those that want peace of mind, you just replace the Shims. In a worst case scenario, you would need to replace the exhaust Cam to rid the noise.

Not too worried yet as Matt did explain this to me before buying the car.

That being said, I very much doubt it is the exhaust Cam as I spoke to Gotch and Cooper and they confirmed that when they did Matt's rebuild, they burred and polished the cams and rechecked them to make sure they were perfect. One can see the specific pics here -- http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=9185&page=4

Thanks for the concern guys, I'm not worried about the car blowing up at all, the engine build and the parts that are inside this engine are extremely strong, the shims on the other hand, were never replaced, and are expected to be adjusted on an old engine.

So I am doing preventative maintenance so that this engine lasts when we supercharge her.

And in reply to Josh ZN, I always knew there would be some costs involved in maintaining this car. She is 11 years old, and parts tend to break on a performance machine such as this. I set aside cash for replacing many parts on her with newer ones.

The other thing you can do is just drop 2 15" subs in the boot, and forget about the shims rattling all together....

Lol. Ha ha. ya, you cannot hear the tapping/ticking noise from inside the car.

I prefer to just make her back to perfect to begin with, even if its an issue most M3's have and can be ignored, I'd rather just fix it.

Arrgghhh damn the dreaded shim noise , had them on my E46M as well. What I did notice was that after changing to Mobil1 for some odd reason it was not so noticeable. Could have just been in my head but i swear it went quieter.

Hope you come right dude, that noise is irritating and will not break anything from what i was told as well.

I'm sure the cams will be fine, just try do the shims and take it form there.

I see they talk about adjustments every 45k km's

I am curious as to how they burred them.....
Chisel? 4 pound hammer? elephant?

If they were burred and G&C had to DE-burr, it is obvious there was wear

Crash. Congrats. Jezabel was one of my favorite threads on the forum.

This noise from your m? Is it louder at lower revs under torque? As in pulling up a steep drive way in first? Or is it a constant noise Through out the gears and speed?

Hi Technician, the ticking noise is only at lower revs, goes away as you climb through the Rev range. It is not constant.

Already been to SAV this morning, he called me at 8:30 sharp, engine was open and he had already inspected the shims, some were off, but he asked me to come take a look for myself. I arrived and he immediately showed me that the exhaust Cam is in pretty bad shape, as are the rockers. He called it, not even looking at the engine, just by listening he knew that was a bad exhaust Cam. Goes to show this man's reputation is well earned.

So, got on the phone with Burgy and he organised me a new Exhaust Cam and a full set of rockers in 4 hours. Already dropped them off at SAV who inspected them and said they are good to go.

So, Jezebel will be back on the road come friday.

Thank you Burgy and big thank you to SavSpeed.

This is so hilarious:roflol: I wonder how Matt Q feels about you taking the car to sav. People who have read the Jezebel threads would know how Matt Q bashed Sav.

I like Jezebel's current owner beta:thumbs:

Nice!! Glad to hear all will be sorted bud!!:joy::thumbs: Positive side is that you now know that you have a new exhaust cam and rockers so the engine will be even more solid than it was before!!

I was gonna do the schrick cams, rockers and valves but the guy Burgy sold them to would not sell them back. That would have been really cool to get those. But hey, later in the build I'll stick some of those in.

That's awesome. I've never had any work on either my E30 or E34 done this quick.

Well i am glad it is sorted now.
Do you mind taking pictures of the worn cam.
Is it on the entire lobe, has it been scored, are the lobes pitted? I would be really interested to see how they have worn and if they might be blue from heat.
