Short VIN

Hi All,

New to the forum, thanks for allowing me to join.

My dad is giving me his old BMW 316 that he bought new many years ago.

I am trying to figure out some info on the vehicle, but cannot find anything.

The VIN number on the license disk is only 8 characters long and apparently that is too short??

Vin: 00561105

How do I figure this out...

I am only getting the vehicle in a week or so. Being shipped from Cape Town, will see then.
I only have a picture of the license disc currently.

What is the VIN on the body itself? Sounds odd. Does the car have aapv numbers?

I could be under correction, but from what I've noticed is that earlier cars only had 8 digit vins

The strange thing is that all VIN searches on that number says it is a 318. Is that normal?

Apparently the speedometer is no longer working, so I am trying to get some info on that.
Looking for spare parts, and it seems that the VIN number is the way to go.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge and thanks for all the feedback!!

The e12 I had also had a short vin
Will see if I can find the thread

Thread wasnt useful, even the guy that worked at the factory did not get back to me.
But there are short vins on the older cars, so there is nothing to worry about - I think it may be an SA only thing though, could be for cars assembled at the rosslyn plant before a certain year.

What year is your car?
