I am probably gonna try the 330i sportpack gear lever, it is much shorter than the stock integrated boot/lever.
sat in my friends, and gave it a few throws, feels really good

ahh ok, obvs the one is waaaaay more expensive than the other :) the knob also gives a significant reduction in throw distance.

The throw distance will remain the same. You are merely replacing the knob, not the actuating arm. So the length ie throw will remain exactly the same. Might "feel" like smaller throws but in reality its doing nothing.

on a pivot, the longer the leaver, the further the "distance" between the leaver on opposite pivot ends, even though the pivot angle remains the same. Although the angle/distance under the pivot remains the same, the distance the hand travels is less, this is obvious.

think I am gonna try this, see how it is, borrow my friends ZHP knob, which will reduce more, and see how that is

The feel will 'stay' the same but as with a proper short shift kit it changes from day to night.
