Here we go again.....:sorry: Since BMW has now shifted over to Shell, is there anybody using their (Shell) 10w60 M oil in their E36 M3?

My car is due for a service and obviously Castrol Edge Professional is now off the table:skit:

My opinion:
Mobil 1 0w40. High quality oil used by Porsche.
E36 M3's oil original spec was 15w40 according to the manual. 0w40 is a better fit.. More cold start protection 0W, and the correct high temp spec 40, as per the original!

Surely engines go through extensive testing with different oils to see it's best fit? I might be way off here but changing to a different brand is mainly cause shell offered them a better deal than castrol.

As you said you are way off.

Castrol is a sludge machine.

Well he's not entirely way off. Just the first bit. As castrol was probably the first company to offer bmw the best deal.

As far as bmw is concerned your car only needs to last 100 000 kms

Weird,I've been using castrol for years on my beemers,(had 2x 518's 1x528i and 535i,3× e30's 325i, e36 was 320i,325i and 2x 328i still have 1 and then my e39 528i which sold last week) but on castrol I've never had a sludge issue on any of them (might just be lucky, but oil changes were often, every 5-7k km's) and I'm a spirited driver, whenever it was service and tune up time the tappet covers would come off (on the ones with adjustable tappets)and they always looked clean, just that slight brown colour on the rockers but no build up of any sort.
Cause afaik engine sludge builds up if there's not sufficient crank ventilation and oils not reaching the optimal temperature(take note "slow" and short trip drivers) to evaporate water through the crank ventilation.

The secret to your clean engines is to be found in the following statement and I quote "(might just be lucky, but oil changes were often, every 5-7k km's) ".

New engines have intervals between 20 000 and 25 000 Kms and what is worst the oil filters have in most cases diminished in size.
