so today i got a bit of a shock :

need to replace for the first time REAR pads on my 330d, so off i go to the nearest autozone, thinking a set of ATE's should not break the bank, after all i replaced the front pads not 2 months ago with a set of ATE's for about R600-00 give or take a few bucks..

i nearly fell over backwards, when at the first autozone the counter jockey calmly informs me that a set of ferodo's (they dont have ate's) will set me back R1200-00!! after telling him that i hope he has a tub of vaseline handy, else he was not going to be able to stick them pads where the sun dont shine, i head of to the next shop..

same story.. cheapest i could find was a safeline set for R900-00. which i dont want. anyways, to cut a long story short, after a bit of internet investigation, i have discovered the cause of this crazyness. its the same pads as used by the M3,M5,X5,X3,Z4 Mcoupe.. even the M3 CLS..

http://www.fmecat.eu/buyersGuide1.asp?prdgrp=2&langID=1&partNo=FDB1483

so now why on earth should a set of pads cost up to 3 times more just because a "motorsport" model uses them!!? the 320i pads for instance has almost exactly the same dimensions, just about 3mm less in width, and cost about R400-00.. bastards.

i dont even want to know what these cost from the agents..

Strange that the 330d pads would be so different and more pricey than the 330i pads, I got Bilstein front and rear brake pads for my 330i from bemows for R1k, strangely enough of this R1k, R650 was for the rear pads, thought it was pretty strange that 330i front brake pads would be cheaper than 318i ones and that the rear ones that are so small would be so much more, but didn't bother me too much since the total price was not that bad, not that this is really on topic, thought I would just share :)

Strange I just did a quick check on realOEM and it seem that the part numbers for the rear pads for the 330d and 330i are exactly the same:
34216790071

Could still be a mistake though, but worth checking out.

thanx for that info, ill give bemows a try tommorow, R650 is a lot better than R1200-00. :)

yeah the 330i/330d pads are exactly the same, but like you say the rears are more expensive than the fronts (up to twice as expensive, depending on where you buy) simply because its the same ones as the M3.. freaking ridiculous!

thanx guys, got them from bemows for R650-00 , thanx for the tip sankekur :)

its still more expensive than i paid for front ATE's (which is oem) which just proves the point .. the moment something is used on the M3, the price jumps 50%, for no good reason :dunno:

dis afrika boet...

Why dont you just go get some cardboard and be done with it :)

Besides, its always more fun if the rear locks up without any reason what so ever

My opel did that, one of the rear wheels would lock up if you just touched the brake pedal, so braking in a corner was more of a gamble than it would normally be :)
