Service Time

Hi everyone,

Hope you can help me with a couple of answers (im still new to my BMW E36):

1. My service light has just gone to the yellow service block, and also indicates OIL SERVICE. Does this mean exactly what is says, that just an oil service is needed? This is my first service with this car so i do not know what was done at the last service.

2. How long to you think i can still go while driving in the Yellow service block? The soonest i can get the car for a service would be this weekend, which im KM terms is about 600kms away.

thanks in advance for your help everyone.

Oil service in general is just that, bearing in mind that the previous services were done in the correct manner.

You can easily stretch it to this weekend. On the majority of your motorplan services, they give you 1000km over.

100 000 km is traditionally an Inspection service. What does the service history say?

I dont know the service history, i only recently bought this car....Looking through the service books, it was last serviced by BMW Waterfront - and has always been service ONLY by BMW..Im taking the car to Zeemax for the service, by using my car key they would be able to tell the history right?

HELLAS - i know the shock of this news, but seriously man, this car has that mileage, the previous owner hardly ever used this car and i was the lucky person to find it :excited: AND, im only the second owner

///Motorsport kop,
The services work in the following order:
First service is the
- Oil service, then
- Inspection I
- Oil service
- Inspection II
Then the cycle starts again.... oil service, Insp I etc.

Check the service book to verify if they are in sequence, and the next service, is infact the oil service. Sometimes, they can reset it twice and it goes out of sequence......

The Inspection II is the biggest service.

The E36 service interval is usually around 11 500 to 13 000km depending on how its driven.

You can estimate a worst case of 2000 km for each green light. I think the yellow would give you the same, but i haven't waited for the yellow....

Yellow means due for service, red means overdue. I dont think the e36 key holds the car service history. As far as i know that was only E46 and up, but I could be wrong.

You can go to any BMW - provide the body number and they will be able to pull up the service history - only issue is that dealerships only pick up the history in their stable (i think) - eg. Tygervalley (Forsdicks) will not be able to pick up SMG details... also you can try phoning BMW customer service - surely all dealerships must upload their data to the central BMW system? This way you will be able to pick up everything that was done on the car - quite a comprehensive list... i did this before i bought my car....

All serivce and repair items passed through to motorplan is available from BMW motor plan, just give them a ring, I even managed to get for my 95 E34, meaning you can pickup first 100,000 or 5 years

After that, then yes, you are reliant on dealer info, but what you are going to find in a lot of cases that once its out of motor plan, people take their cars elsewhere due to BMW being insane with pricing.

NOPE, I pulled sone VINS off a E39 I once wanted to buy and it was tracked across 3 different dealers. I didn't buy it as the last record that BMW inserted into their books was that MP on it was scrapped due to accident repair being done by a non-BMW workshop.
