Okay I know this has probably been posted but did a quick search and cant find info.

* It a 95 318i E36
* Its a 290k service.
* What oil should I be putting in, have been sing Castrol GTX high millage for the last 2 oil changes.
* Been having rockers clapping after start for a few seconds.
* Then I changed the spark plugs at about 260k should I change them again or not?
* Did the petrol filter on the same time as well.
* Need to replace the pipe from the power steering reservoir to the pump as well if anyone knows where to get it that wont break the bank please let me know.
* Then the last couple of weeks Ive been having a noise on my fanbelt as well.
Thread about fanbelt
I have been noticing it is only at low rpms that it sequels, as soon as I go over sa 1500 to 2000 it goes quietish.

For the pipe, try vees pipes in jhb 0113344413

Wrt the squealing noise I would check if the belts r ok maybe worn as well as tensioners

If the plugs seem to be in good cond, don't replace

And That's my 2cents worth... :=).

Hey Thunder!

Like Mr Muhamm said, try to get the belts tension up by either by manual adjustment/tentioner replacement.

Leave the spark plugs & fuel filter as is.

The hose if you don't want to spend a lot of cash you can have 'made up' at a hydraulic shop or workshop similar, it's only the rubber peace needing replacement, the steel fittings only gets build over onto the new rubber hose. :=):

The oil I would say try & stick to the same type, honestly haven't had a pertol engine with that many k's done, so I'm not to sure regarding the oil.

Good luck man!

Brake fluid acts as a preservative for the rubber belt, if you want to pour some drops on it where the noise comes from, mind splash damage and the paint. But that's only a temp solution. As posted above, rather replace the belts they're good for around 100k km and +- 5-6 years (and check tensioners). I would do plugs after 30k km. Fuel filter will be fine till around 80k km.

Tentioner pulley or manual adjuster?

Tentioner pulley, apply correct size socket onto pulley, and apply force in direction to move pulley away from belt. Size 5/8 imperial socket on our BMW (slightly smaller than a 16mm socket).

If manual adjuster (looks like a long threaded bolt sometimes), look for the lock nut, loosen lock nut, and turn long threaded bolt type thing until belt starts to tention up. This could be either clock- or anti-clockwise direction. With this type of adjustment watch out not to make it too tight, then bearings on the pulleys will wear out faster, or the belt itself an snap when driving!

Take a pic & post (of the belt area on the engine), or ask some one with a vehicle like yours that have done this in the past?

Good luck! :=):

Hope these will assist. :=): (if the same as yours?)

It shouldn't be necessary to remove the fan, usually the belt's circumferance is big enough to go over the blads of the fan once off, just be sure of the belt's routing through all of the pulleys before removing it, it can be a bitch with some trying to get it back right if not remembered! Draw a simple picture for yourself, or take one for reference! :=):

Definitely +1 on the routing diagram,

I replaced my belts a few months ago and forgot to draw the routing diagram, spent a good few hours trying to figure it out.

Dont be afraid to apply a bit of force on the tensioner, it helps having a buddy with you. Once you have your belts remove, its probably a good time to check all your pulleys for play and replace them if needed,

Also @ 290k you might have to think about changing your fan clutch, and eventually when you've saved up some cash, time to redo your valve stem seals, is your car eating any oil?

Not eating oil. Only time it made me confused was when it was left for a week then it dissapeared completely.
