Secondhand BMW 320D - Hints please

Good Morning,

I'm in the process of looking for a second hand 320D to be used as a daily driver (fuel consumption being my motivation).

My current vehicles:
3.7 Hummer H3
3.0 Mazda BT50

What are things I should look out for when test driving?

I'm looking in the region of R 160,000 for the vehicle, so that puts me in the range of vehicles with almost 100,000km on the clock.

How much will it roughly cost to extend the motor plan? (have heard figures from R5,000 to R35,000)

any imput will be appreciated :ty:

You can get a quote to extend the motorplan from BMW.

My dad bought one just 4 months ago.

All we had issues with is a vibration when you depress the clutch.

This ended up being a worn flywheel. R18,000 for the kit from the dealers :yuck: and a LUK kit for around R12,000....

Other potential issues : auto boxes, although they are quite tough, turbo's and injectors.

Other than that, just check the service history and which parts have been replaced, and you'll get a very good idea of how the car was handled and maintained. The 320D is a fantastic car, we get around 17-18km/l openroad and 10km/l town driving.

And remember, if you buy from a dealer they have to give you a mandatory 6month warranty (thanks to the Consumer Protection Act).

And by the way, 1year extension on my 325i was R8000.... I think this reflects on potential repair costs should something go wrong. Some food for thought.

Hope this helps.

Hmm, makes you wonder about the extended maintenance plan ...

what do you mean when you talk about the LUX kit for R12,000 (I'm assuming you had some of the luxury accesories fitted, but you know what they say about assuming .... )

LoL dude, a LUK clutch kit is the same clutch kit dealers use, not a LUX kit.

 He he, that's the one. It's just a generic brand of clutch. Propably just as good as the OEM one, just cheaper. I saw both and they looked very much the same!

Don't let LUK hear that!
LUK is OEM supplier to all motorcar manufacturers in Germany
It's not probably as good as but it definitely is as good as the genuine BMW branded parts :bravo:

hehe, there you go :tease:

well, hopefully I can have them exchange as much parts as possible at the last service, just to be sure everything is top notch. (then again you stil have the risk of them buggering something up during the process) :bangdesk:

Sennin, you can have my 320d for 177k. October 07 model. M sport pack, black in colour, tan leather, sunroof, electric towbar. Mileage 79800k. Balance of motorplan. It's a second car so hardly use it. PM me if you interested.

ok,

so after a brain cracking two weaks i finally decided to rather go the trade in route...

I will be trading in my BT50, so this will give me a deposit of roughly R55,000.

So now I have two options:
1. Buy a 330D with 50,000km on the clock for around R350,000

Or:

2. A new 320D as BMW have the R50,000 discount running at this point in time so I can get the base model for R322,500 and then adding packages M-sport, exclusive etc. to get to R350,000

What do you guys recommend?

Well, the one I'm looking at is this one:

http://search.autotrader.co.za/www/cars_advert?id=201143188095251

Mileage: 96,251
Year Model: 2007

extending motor plan:
20,000km 1Year = R24,500
50,000km 1 year = R59,000

Motorplan is pricey hey ?

I'd choose the 330d.

Go test drive both, it should be easy to make up your mind afterwards.

hmm, so you guys would recommend a 2009 330D above a 2011 320D?

except for the additional power of the 330D what other advantages would there be?
