School me on E70s

So with the new X5 due in 2014, the prices of the E70 seem to be falling nicely :fencelook:

So I know I want the 3.0D but there are so many variations of this.
Activity, Dynamic, Innovation, Sport, Steptronic
Then theres the sd and the xdrive?

Also a friend said I should try to get the single turbo version instead of the twin turbos. so which model has the TT

So my question is whats the difference between the models above, which one should I stay away from and which one should I be looking for.

Thanks in advance

Ok
Sd is a twin turbo
Activity and sport are different packages on exterior, interior and suspension
The one to get is a msport 3.0sd or 3.5d both are 3.0d twin turbos. If you budget allows go for a 2010 LCI. It has the new idrive

All of then are X drive, 4x4

Thanks for that.

Didnt realise they were all x-drive. Any explanation as to why some have the x-drive badge and some dont (on the same derivative, for example 3.0d)?

30sd has the badge on the doors. It goes like this.

30d - 3.0 i6 Single Turbo
30sd/35d - 3.0 i6 Twin Turbo
40d - 3.0 i6 Twin Turbo (New gen motor)
///M50d - 3.0 i6 Tri Turbo (New gen motor)

Lci 30d has the new gen motor. When I say new gen I mean the motor in the F25 30d, F30 330d, F10 530d and so on.

The pre Lci 30d/30sd/35d use the M57 which is last gen motor.

The 30d(Lci)/40d/50d use the N57.

Power on these motors are as follows:

30d (pre Lci) - 173kw / 520nm
30d (Lci) - 180kw / 540nm
30sd/35d - 210kw / 560nm
40d - 225kw / 600nm
///M50d - 280kw / 740nm

Hope this helps.

So would it be as simple as adding the twin turbo and software upgrade to get the pre lci to3.0sd
No. Buy the 3.0sd/3.5d/4.0d , if you want the twin turbo.

I have a question about the X5

There 2 type of gear box the 6 speed and 8 speed

Is the 8 speed more reliable than the 6 speed

And what's the issue with these gear boxes what's the common problems

I have been looking at a X5 2007 with 180K on the clock
Which has the 6 speed box is there any advise on this

I've only got a little experience with the 6 speed box in my 530d. Mileage is similar and so far so good. Most of the time you don't even know it's changing gears. Silky smooth. I'm still going to have it serviced though for peace of mind... Depends on how the car you're looking at has been driven and looked after

We have an E60 with the 6sp and the X5 e70 with the 8sp. 8sp is in a different league. You can't really compare the two. The 6sp is not bad, but are more prone the 1st gear jerks, especially if you pickup mechatronic issues. We did a full gearbox rebuild and mechatronic replacement at ZF SA around 5 years ago, worked out +-R34000 back then.

What is your price range

Trying not to spend to much so anything from 130K to 170K

This can be a very expensive car to maintain. The electronic handbrakes are prone to fail (as short as every 80 000km, costing +R15k to repair) and the air suspension can also blow a hole in your pocket. Normal 30d engine issues, but they do tend to have more front suspension wear (bushes, wishbones, etc)

You can definitely manage the maintenance cost, but it can quick become disproportionate to what you are planning to spend on buying one.

Great car, but it does come with health warning (the same goes for any second hand car that cost <1/5 of a new replacement model)
